You could go for the on piece design like the last pumas and earlier defenders.

I replaced my rear half shafts and drive members about 3 years ago and got all the bits from Advanced Factors, a sponsor on here, I don't remember the cost offhand but it was nowhere near the Ashcrofts prices, they've taken a fair bit of punishment since then and still going strong.

Is it not better to have flange and half shaft separate so that if this happens again I can simply whip out the half shaft and drive home? Seems not possible with an integrated system?

If the flange and shaft are one piece then it can’t wear the splines on the flange.

If you're worried about snapping a shaft (a rare event) and driving home you can always bung the old flanges and centre caps in the toolbox.
However by far the most common failure is the flange/halfshaft joint and you eliminate this with one-piece shafts. |

The only problem with 1 piece, and I don't doubt you may get some more miles out of them is I'd only trust Genuine myself.
And they are a whopping price! Ashcroft are very good but still not far off on price to Genuine. Cheaper alternatives are fine but I don't think I'd want risk them with diff being put at risk if failiure occurred. Eitheway both 1piece Genuine and 2piece Ashcroft with HD flanges as I have are capable of many high milages and won't leave you stranded. Ashcroft have a 2 year warranty against breakage. (Not fretting.) I would imagine Genuine is much the same warranty wise? ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️ |

My experiences: If you go for lockers go for Aschroft, if your axles are standard you can live with standard halfshaft.
A single pieces halfshaft normally breaks at the flang side so you can pull the half shaft and put the flang back. The problem with breaking halfshafts and lockers is that the lockers don't like breaking halfshaft. So next to the broken halfshaft you might have to replace the locker. Open diffs and limited slip diffs have less problems with breaking halfshafts or C.V. joint. I even managed to break a Aschroft rear halfshaft just after the 5 year waranty ran out. I replaced mine with second hand Discovery one piece shafts from eBay. £28 for the pair and I’m sure that was delivered. Yes, some don’t like used parts, but the rest of my motor is ‘used’ and I’m not going to systematically replace every part. If they look fine they probably ARE fine.

I have literally just replaced Miffy’s rear half shafts and flanges after 197k miles they owe me nothing... I went utterly standard and see nothing wrong with that in the slightest. Miffy has had a hard life but a well serviced one at that. The driveline clonk has completely gone and just in time as the near-side shaft splines were needle sharp and paper thin...
Anyway, think they cost less than £80... works for me. I am not a fan of the all in one shafts as I believe there is more redundancy in the two piece system. Yes they may need a little more maintenance and may be the cause of the clonking from time to time, but it is tried and tested. Anyway that’s my opinion |
