Rumble Strips
Does anyone know the legal requirements for the council to install rumble strips?

Our local road is a minor road (unclassified) . virtually a straight road with a very gentle gradient 0.5 miles long and a national speed limit zone. The width of the road is such that no centre line is on the road so width is less then 5.5m

No injuries or deaths on this road and no vehicle collisions. Only vehicle issues are wall strikes at either end of 0.5mile straight in ice/snow conditions with people driving at inappropriate speed and not making the bends.

The local council has just installed rumble strips in the middle of the half mile straight national speed zone.

Reason why installed in middle of a national speed zone is that there is a cricket club entrance there. No off road parking exists for cricket club and a few times a year they have children there.

No consultation with local residents.

So what are the legal requirements for rumble strips in a NSL?

In Defender at 45 mph no effect!

Do an internet search for DMRB & rumble strips/speed humps/traffic calming.

i did have a quick search before posting.

What I could not find was legal requirements for rumble strips on minor roads in national speed limits.

The information I can quickly see involves trunk roads rather then minor rural roads.

The aims of traffic calming are

Quote:

the potential benefits of traffic calming in relation to the
following Government transport objectives:

• improving safety;

• protecting the environment;

• integrating transport;

• improving accessibility; and

• assisting economic growth

It is difficult to improve on no injuries!

Protecting the environment? No

integrating transport and improving accessibility? No

Assisting economic growth? Difficult to see as grazing/hay fields either side of road.

As far as I am concerned a complete waste of money as will not reduce traffic speed and will be badly damaged if we have a half decent bad winter.

Well last winter the local council overspend £520,000 on the gritting so having surplus money?

My guess is local councillor trying to keep in with local cricket club without regard to council budget and any actual positive benefit to safety, economic growth, environment etc.

My local council has removed some when residents have complained about the noise of cars braking for them and accelerating away again. They also cause additional pollution too

If it were March, you might be right. Bit early to start blowing budgets in any department.

We have a rash of cycle lanes being installed around Norwich. Seems shed loads of money for these although most cyclists don’t seem to use them.

There’s always the possibility Brendan, the speed calming was put on the wrong road. It’s not unheard of and no one will admit to it.

Well the Leeds Bradford super cycle highway is 23km and cost £18,000,000.

Now the disruption whilst it was been installed was tremendous.

Use now? Claimed to be 500,000 trips on 2 years or call it 5,000 per week or 700 per day or say 60/hour for a 12 hour day. When we drive alongside a 10-15 km section of it we may see one cyclist.

A local tunnel about 2 km long is been targeted as a cycle way under a cost of £3,000,000+ with no indication of ongoing maintained economic cost.

Now £3,000,000 would fill in a few potholes in this region.

Well have had a read of the DMRB and am asking council how they can justify the rumble strips.

Road is a minor less then 5.5 m wide, unlit national speed limit road with no history of injuries or collisions where the rumble strips are.

These sort of devices are supposed to be used on lit roads with low speed limits.

They can not argue improve safety as zero accidents is difficult to improve on.

They can not argue environmental benefit as these rumble strips will not help and may well have a negative impact as people brake and then accelerate.

No nearby residents so their life not improved.

To reduce speed limit is costly and will be difficult if not impossible to enforce.

To light the road is costly, unnecessary and environmentally damaging.

My conclusion waste of taxpayers money!

Brendan,

How many local councillors or their relations are part of the cricket team?

Now I wonder if someone has just hit the nail on the head bang on target with a great big hammer!

New councillor has been sponsoring local cricket club for 10 years and company name is on end of club house close to road right by some brand new bright yellow rumble strips.

Have been asking for legal justification for these strips.
