Portugal 2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 HT Keswick Green
2..4 Fuel economy
Hi.
My car is a 110 HardTop. Full roll cage, winch, full underbody guars (most of them made of aluminium). LR HD suspension. 265/75R16, wolf rims.

Oil - 5W40.

What economy should I expect?

When I drive up to 100km/h I can arrive to 10l/100km. Going 120-130km/h in a highway is decreasing it to ~12.5l/100km.

The thing is that 3 years ago the consultation was 10 litres on the highway. In the meantime I put the roll cage and a snorkel. Not too many more mods that could make a difference. Bergos

A Puma 2.4 should run 5w30, which could account for a small loss in economy if you switched to 5w40 at some point along the way. Also, the Ford spec for a Puma is specifically for a fuel economy engine oil (I think it is WSS-M2C913-B) that resist the increase in viscosity that usually happens as an oil ages. If your current oil isn’t specifically a fuel economy formula then that too may account for a small loss. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

My 2.4 with same tyre size averages around 10.5-11km/L with the following driving profile:
- 60% countryside with rolling hills with speeds approx 50-75km/h
- 30% highway at speed 100-105km/h
- 10% town with speeds <50km/h

Load typically 2-3 persons + 100kg "stuff". All oils as per spec.

I have also recently started running 2 stroke oil in the fuel (ratio 200:1). Can't say I've noticed the fuel consumption changing (need a few more tanks to reach a conclusion) but engine seems to run smoother and cleaner (less smoke). Others have reported improved fuel consumption though.

Now the big question is how does this oil protect the engine in hot climate - 40-45°C? Bergos

If you are using a quality one, like Motul Specific 913D, probably fine. I would certainly stay away from the cheaper ones if you are running extreme conditions. Did LR ever specify a different grade hotter climates? 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

best I've managed on a standard 110xs with remap is 7.037ltr / 100km (ie 40mpg)

in terms of economy speed is the work of the devil, on need to be cruising at about 80-85kmh. Thumbs Up

Over the last 12 months, 6000 miles, my 2011 110 station wagon has averaged out at 29.4 imperial mpg = 9.6 l/100km. That's with standard spec oils, winch, guards, 100kg of stuff in the back, over all sorts of driving inc. light towing., green lane, motorway long distance, whatever.

But every individual fill-up is different, depends what I've been doing.
