Try re-synchronising the spare fob. From memory you stand just outside the car and press the unlock button four times.

I have tried this, but no harm in trying again.

Just press either multiple times until the dash indicators flash fast, then stop pressing the fob.
Once the red dash light go back to normal slower flash rate your good to go. It have you ever changed fobs? If so it might not have been programmed properly when done. But try the above first though. Also, are they new batteries? No Guts, No Glory. 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

How old is the car? Are we talking about the old two button Rover fobs or the newer two button Land Rover fobs?
Is your spare fob one that's never been used or is it an older scruffy one? The old Rover fobs used to suffer with faulty microswitches and cracked circuit boards if they'd had a hard life. There are also different models of the old Rover fobs, the 3TXB's if i remember correctly don't have an imobiliser coil in them so you have to push the button to disarm the immobiliser. The 17TN fobs will automatically transmit the code to the car when it's near the ignition switch. However the repair casings that Land Rover sell are all branded 3TXB i think, even if the circuit board is a 17TN one. |

Thanks for the assistance, but not got to the bottom of this yet.
My Defender is a 2012 and my two fobs are the standard fobs for that year. I've had the vehicle for 2 1/2 years not really sure if I have used the Spare fob until recently, but if I have there was no problem with starting. Tried the re-synch (4x lock press, wait until quick flash stops) with my Spare fob several times today - no change, still behaving as described above. Trying to solve the problem, I replaced the battery in my Spare with a new battery a couple of days ago - made no difference. It started with a kiss, never thought it would come to this. Disconnnect the battery, for 20 mins and reconnecting is also worth a try. No Guts, No Glory.

Battery disconnected, but no change.
I suppose I should be happy I have one working fob  It started with a kiss, never thought it would come to this.

i had a similar issue last month with mine it was the battery in the fob . in my case it still did not work until i locked the car with the key four times then using the fob to unlock the car . its worth a try

Tried the 4x key lock/unlock - still no joy!
Something I have become aware of - the issue with my spare fob is time related. If I'm quick about unlocking, entering and starting, engine starts fine. However, any delay between unlocking and starting (such as time removing disklock) and immobiliser seems to have kicked in, requiring me to lock and unlock again before I can start. Who made the immobiliser for LR and is it possible to get in touch with them direct? Main dealer wants me to book in my Defender to investigate. Don't really want to pay their hourly rate for what could well be just a few presses of a button or two. It started with a kiss, never thought it would come to this. Just tidying this up ...
Used a main dealer this week for MOT and a swivel seal, asked them to take a look at my spare fob (that was still behaving as in my original post). Dealer went through reprogramming procedure with both my fobs - now both working as they should. In the grand scheme of things only a minor issue, but hopefully helpful to someone with a similar problem, to know that main dealer can resolve. Okay, forget what I said in my last post about main dealer being able to sort my fob problem out.
Later same day my dodgy fob is still behaving badly! When I came to try it a second time, it behaved as my original post. Went back into main dealers (Listers, Hereford) for a chat! Was offered a diagnostic investigation at £156 an hour - I'll live with my dodgy spare! It started with a kiss, never thought it would come to this. SIII CSW Safari, limestone, (JAC 914N).
