For all that effort of removing fitting and the same again would it not be easier to just overhaul the replacement axle? Depending on what work you plan on doing it doesn’t take too long to replace most parts on an axle.
There are some difference in axles over the models and time periods but I’m not sure on ratios of that era. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html 90 V8 - Maggie http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic42564.html 110 TD5 - Buggsy http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic59029.html 52HG25 lightweight https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic72342.html D3 Hse - Fiona Capri 2l S - Anna Think I might have a problem............ |

I guess it depends if the OP vehicle has has a disc brake axle fitted out of a Discovery, but if not I would do as Mash recommends and do the temporary axle up.

The axle diff ratios are all the same. It's the transfer box ratios that differ on various coil sprung LR's. Darren

I wanted to retain the original axles so all the numbers match
The current axle is disc but the temporary axle is drum, would that cause any issues?

I think ( but do stand to be corrected) that 200Tdi’s where drum brake as standard.
The only issue I see you may have is if you have alloys they don’t fit the drum brake axle without modification or spacers. Cheers Will 2005 90 XS 1954 86'' Series 1 tilt 1968 88” 2A 200tdi 2002 110 Hardtop |

Some very late 200's (like Kits') received the disk brake axle. Darren

^^^^ Agree. My first new 90 was a 200Tdi, drum braked. A friend of mine bought one about 6 month later (factory soft top with rear roll cage... very nice!) and that had discs.

The axle I was going to buy turned out to be duff
A friend of mine has a Disco 1 rear axle, however I don't know if it's from a 200 tdi/300 tdi or a v8. Are they all the same ratio/fitment? 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW 1956 Series 1 Hard-top 1958 Series 1 Soft-top |

Could either be a 10 or 24spline unit which as long as you get the whole unit wont be an issue. The diff may have the three pin rubber donut input though which will be a pain as you would need to swap the input flange and spacer to use it on a defender. All of the discovery rear axles are disc braked too.
Ratios etc are not an issue. Many fit disco rear axles complete to upgrade drum braked 90s to disc. Steve 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread |

Okay thats good to know, are there any specific models which didn't have the rubber donut?
I've just had a look on eBay and there's a Salisbury axle from a td5 not too far from me, worth the extra cash? 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW 1956 Series 1 Hard-top 1958 Series 1 Soft-top |

From what i recall pre facelift (200) discovery has a normal drive flange and facelift (300) has the donut. Doesnt always ring true though as i have had a late 98' V8 without the donut.
Salisbury wont fit a 90 without modification due to larger springs and longer diff so your standard prop wont fit. Steve 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread Last edited by rallysteve on 22nd Aug 2018 6:14am. Edited 1 time in total |

I think October 92 was when they started fitting discs in the rear.
