I have a 2012 4.4, run for 2years now. Prior I had a 2010my 3.6 for 3 years. Approx 10k a year in them.
4.4 is smoother with better economy and this plus paddles on wheel. If looking 3.6, look at 2010my onwards for better dash, ice etc Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

If you could do it all over again would you prefer the 3.6 or the 4.4? 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW

My personal preference is the 4.4. I personally don't see any advantages (disregarding cost) of the 3.6 over the 4.4. The 8 speed gearbox is brilliant. Especially as in top gear every 1000rpm gets you 50mph.
Our 4.4 averages 28mpg around hilly north Devon and it isn't driven with economy in mind. On a steady motorway trip you can expect low 30s to the gallon 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon 1990 Vogue SE Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 Td5 90 Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic50767.html Tdi 110 Thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic69562.html RRC Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic54492.html Instagram http://www.instagram.com/george_grafton |

Have a look on YouTube at " Harry's garage". Are you familiar with him? Motoring journalist and proper petrol head. He runs a 3.6 TDV8 and rates it very highly, there is a great video review by him. I've had a 3.6 TDV8 (2010 facelift) for the last 18 months or so.
When things are good, they are fantastic, fantastic cars. Supremely comfortable, effortless mile munchers. When things are bad, the bills can escalate very, very quickly. Even if you have a local independent specialist who has much more reasonable labour rates than a main dealer. And there's a lot of stuff that can go wrong. Either get one with a good warranty, or keep a spare 3-5K in the bank should the worst happen! Consumables are priced for a 70K car, even though the purchase price is now down to mondeo levels. They are heavy cars and go through things like discs and pads pretty quickly. OE tyres are about £170 a corner and they last for about 20K if you swap them round the corners regularly. If I was to do it again, I'd probably get a 4.4 over a 3.6 - less problems with turbo and EGR valve failures, however you gain DPFs which can also go wrong if you don't give them long runs every now and then. With the anti-diesel climate at the moment, a petrol one may be a better option for the future, even with the way worse fuel consumption... If you want something that is capable of bumpy tracks, is reliable and can lug a fair bit, but you don't want to worry about if it's going to bankrupt you, something like a Subaru Outback (petrol) or an XC70 is probably a safer bet. Or maybe even a FL2 if you want to stay with a landy.. |

i looked at RS6 and A6 alroad options, neither did it for me on overall functionality. all will eat miles nicely.
4.4 also needs to have had the turbo oil drain mod (they can use oil if not which then causes dpf issues) tyres wise, i bought a set of grabber AT, they did 30ish K on the 3.6 and have done 20k on current one. mpg, 3.6 - 26mpg over 30k, 4.4 28mpg over 20k miles. both includes bit of towing (10% of mileages?) at 2- 3 T 3.6 work done in 30k - annual services and an air compressor after it sat for 12mths when i had it up for sale. 4.4 work done (excluding starter motor which was faulty when i got it and supplying dealer fixed along with oil drain mod) - annual services, touching wood, thats it so far. 4.4 i believe is a better drive and i like the steering wheel paddles. (plus my 3.6 as remapped) Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Maybe not the required image but a late petrol p38 with decent history and spec won’t cost a fortune and will be as comfortable as a pair of otter lined slippers. There is a Holland and Holland on fleabay at the moment....
