Well, to start with if you have a Defender the hole is an electrical socket hole not a power take-off hole!
The socket is screwed to the crossmember, and there is no alternative to drilling if you want to fit it in that location. |

Thanks for replying.
I do have a defender - I thought that the hole was a leftover from when power take-offs were fitted - I didn't realise that is was for an electrical socket! Many thanks, Peter Defender 11MY USW |

The PTO hole goes right through the crossmember and (provided that there isn't a fuel tank in the way) you can see all the way to the cover on the back of the transfer box. It is always to the nearside of the centreline of the crossmember (since the power take-off on the t-box is in line with the input shaft).
For a long time now there hasn't been a PTO hole, but there is the smaller recess on the offside of the crossmember (I use the term recess since the hole has never actually gone all the way through at full diameter). It is of smaller diameter than the PTO hole used to be, and was, I am told, intended to allow a standard 7-pin DIN trailer electrical socket to be fitted. Contrary to some rumours, I don't think it ever had an military significance (and a military 12-pin socket won't fit in it anyway). Depsite being designed for the purpose, I have never seen a factory fitted or dealer fitted socket in the recess! |

I couldn't remember whilst sitting at my PC what the back end looked like, so I popped out and took a couple of pics in the dark:
Click image to enlarge It would look a bit better - and be out of the way of any damage...but mine's pretty much protected by the tow ball, bumperette and spare wheel anyway... Click image to enlarge The towball mounted step is good for getting in and out of the back...or just resting your boot to tie the laces Galvanised and less prone to damage than the original folding one Stainless fasteners and loads of dinitrol overspray (maybe removal of the overspray is a job for tomrrow) on mine... Always fitted mine into the hole,, tight fit getting the gen plug through, but does go,,
As my towbar is removed for offroad regularly, saves messing with the socket every time !! California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1 Main Brian James Trailer Dealer for South West UK |

My dealer fitted my 13 pin electrics here, I seem to remember the factory kit comes sealed with silicone and you have to split it apart, drill the crossmember and reseal.
It is so much neater, doesn't pick up dirt or get clipped when off road. |

If going into water/mud etc then consider mounting the trailer socket higher up on rear panel above lights.
Advantages keeps it cleaner, less corrosion problems. Disadvantage you may need a curly extension lead to plug trailer lead in. Brendan |

I have done this, if you are carefull you can take the plug apart (the wheel arch end) and thread the loom thought the rear xmember and re-assemble. like you i did not want to mess with the gloop on the socket end. I took a couple of pictures of the plug and wires before taking it apart |

I have never had to take the standard 12N loom that LR supply, apart to get the end through the rear crossmember hole, to connect to the vehicle loom socket
So unless they have changed since March, when i did the current 110,, can not see why the need to be striped down ?? California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1 Main Brian James Trailer Dealer for South West UK |

Spent all Mornin cleaning my truck, thought I'd have a quick look for the tow elecs, found them, had a dig around in the wheel arch and found a plug here
Click image to enlarge So decided I'd un plug pull wires through and relocate here Click image to enlarge Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated 90 Puma HT |
