Self servicing
I need to do the 96 month service on my 90 2.4.

The truck is in really good nick and has piles of service history (main dealer and indie).

Looking at the costs I’ve been quoted, I’m thinking of tackling it myself, but I’m worried I’ll hammer the resale value. I really don’t want to save a couple of hundred quid now, but lose 10/20% of the value when I come to sell.

What are people’s thoughts? I’ve always serviced my own cars and kept all the receipts for the consumables, but they were all bangers so I was never bothered about the residuals!

My view, if you are competent, keep good records and can demonstrate your care come sale time, you won't suffer much, if at all. Especially if selling private. I would actually prefer a car with clear evidence of good home servicing over an uninterupted book of main dealer stamos.

I do my own work on my 2.4, but I plan on keeping it forever so effct on resale is academic. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I agree with Bluest.
I have been servicing mine every year since the three year warranty expired three years ago.

    Print off a few of the service schedule sheets (do a search, the 2.4 version is on the site somewhere).
    Follow them, or exceed the recommendations. (Like changing the gearbox/transfer box/axle oils more regularly)
    Note what you have done on the service sheet.
    Keep receipts for the parts used, or even keep the end flaps from filter boxes as I do.
    Stuff everything in a series of those cheap plastic A4 document wallets with a label on each for the date of service, mileage and any additional work carried out.


If someone presented me with that type of evidence and clearly knew what they were talking about, then I would have no hesitation over buying without a main dealer service history.

If you take up the free version of JLR Topix you can also keep an eye on any recalls that may apply to your vehicle.

And, in servicing the vehicle yourself, you will know that the jobs were done properly.

There's nothing complicated on most of the service actions. Filling the main gearbox is probably the most tricky as it requires adding the correct quantity of oil and access to the side filler is tight. But not rocket science. Plenty of useful tips on the forum for doing this.

You may have some buyers who will lose interest if you've self serviced it, but there will be as many who value a stack of receipts over a stamp in a service book. So I doubt you'll lose anything like 10-20% of the value if anything at all.

Car Dealers generally like to see a full main dealer history, but when I part ex'd my X-Type the dealer was over the moon when I handed him an A4 folder stuffed full of receipts for everything, plus every MOT.

I've just had a stamp made up for when I service my own cars, so the service books get stamped too.

As has been said keep full records and if its in good order, it shouldn't put off a buyer,
especially if they have knowledge of the Defender and you can show your approach.

You could even use Online Service History https://osh.landrover.com
It's where the dealer prints out the checksheet for a specific service but you can do that, too.
You can also add "services not done by LR".
Might make it all look more "official".

over about 3 yrs old and when out of warranty, I would be more concerned about obvious condition and knowledge of the owner, my experience with Main dealer servicing was that they don't do it properly anyway.

I have always planned to keep mine as long as I can and hence have serviced it myself,

If ever I do have to sell it I can happily field any questions and present evidence of my own competence. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,
