So having gone down the Bowler bumper route
i've just came ot the realization i don't have anywhere to mount my license plate... I currently have a twisted steering guard - obviously the usual bowler setup is license plate on the steering guard. I guess my options are - change to a bowler steering guard Or What is the smallest front plate i can run? can i cut down and make a small version of my current 4 digit license plate and stick it in the middle of the bumper? this is how it currently looks Click image to enlarge Would this be legal? |

If I remember correctly, as long as the letters are the correct size and spacing. All you need is an 11mm border.
So the edges of your plate could be trimmed 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html Instagram - @r22oyp Roy |

Correct
I’ve just had this out with an envious off duty plod aquintance. He reckoned that my cut down front plate was illegal. I said go and check. It’s correctly spaced with platemakers postcode on and more than enough border but shorter than normal. He came back tail between legs Think about those huge rear plates they put on old rrs and rovers that fit the space on the boot. They ere not even the right shape. |

The plate just needs to be big enough to meet the letter size and spacing requirements, and the minimum border size of 11mm.
They're a difficult read but the relevant regulations, The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001, can be found here: http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2001/561/contents/made As an aside, the pedant in me can't help but point out that it's a registration plate, not a licence plate Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? If you want an even shorter number plate you could always buy F1 from Afzal Kahn, I'm sure if you offer him the £12.5m he is asking for it he'd even throw in one of his Chelsea Tractors for you.

I cut mine down only a 1" each end and never had trouble even at the MOT and the F1 plate used to belong to Chelmsford Council as did 1F which I think they sold for £200,000 sounds like a bargain now
Click image to enlarge I also had my number plate fitted on the bulkhead for years on my 200TDi and again never had trouble and this had wrong size letters and cut down. |

I like the idea of the bulkhead as I think the front bumper looks much cleaner without a plate!
Something to deal with when I get my winch bumper one day... |

TBH I would stay "legal"
Any copper looking for a problem may be over-zealous, and also you could have insurance issues ??? I would be less worried about MOT's etc, but someone "wanting to make a point" may make an example of you... It's just not worth it? Insurance wise - they have almost a full A4 page of modifications... a small license plate probably isn't going to make much difference just have to remember to tell them
I'll order one and see how i feel when i get back in a few weeks from now |

As an aside, I visited our local Forestry Commission last weekend and to get in the car park it had to read your front plate rather than issuing a parking ticket. So to get in you would need a visible front plate.
Since we're showing plates, my fav... Interesting. What would actually happen if you didn't have one, or had one which the device couldn't read? Does this mean that if you are in a classic car (black/silver or black/white plate) or you are in a foreign car you can't get in? Or on a motorcycle? |
