Looking for S2 or S2a which version.
Hi all. I'm looking to buy a S2 or S2a preferable with the lights in middle but not really bothered which type.
Is a budget of 7k ok enough to get decent example.
Thanks HK1

Yes! Lots of choice out there, but prices are creeping up.

Work out what’s important to you, - original/ restored/ etc etc.

I prefer late ‘60s 2a’s personally - headlights in grill but single wiper motor, negative earth electrics being my favourite but it’s a personal thing.

I had a 1965 2A 25 years ago. My 2A had individual wiper motors and I also love the look of the lights in the grille.

Never complain about a Defender heater unless you have been in a three lane traffic jam when the Smith's heater matrix gave out filling the cab with antifreeze. It was like Top of the Pops from the 70's Laughing

Probably the only car I have ever owned which made me smile more than my Defender.

I hope you find what you are looking for. I don't think it makes any difference whether it is a 2 or a 2A as long as it's not a basket case.

As JeremyJ says, prices are on the rise.

This was mine.....it’s on the ‘sold’ list below but they are beautiful things; I think possibly the best looking Land Rover....sad again to think it’s gone despite the 9 hour drive to get it back from Wrexham when I bought it.

You have to love it to live with it (it wasn’t something you could jump into everyday and expect it all to work).....individual wiper motors but it did have a Smiths heater (that worked in a way), Fairey overdrive (that made main roads more tolerable), hand throttle (early cruise control?!) headlights in the grille and some of the early features carried over from the SII that disappeared later (its was a 1962 model).

2 1/4 diesel but I think the petrol was probably a sweeter engine and again, a little easier to live with.

Good luck in the search; if I had garage space and the ££, I’d have one again in a moment (but would have to keep the Defender as the daily.....). Ian

Swaps over in 67. Mine was later one with single wiper motor for both wipers and flat smiths heater. The central instruments stay the same up to 71 or later if you go for a military 1/2 ton.
I had to replace the chassis on mine in 1990. Formative years on a farm had killed it. The chassis seem better than the Series III so you might find ones on original one. 1995 Defender 110 CSW

Whilst there is good advice on here, possibly the best advice is to join the SII Club forum.

You do not have to be a member of the Club or even own a SII/IIA,

Like on here, they are very tolerant of people who just have an interest in the vehicles, and the information you are given will usually be more accurate than, for instance, on a Facebook page.

May I suggest that you don't discount the wide-light version, as they are actually rarer than the lights-in-the-middle version and have wipers and heaters that work better.

(I have both types so can do the comparisons!)

On the left is currently the earliest known UK vehicle with lights in the wings. They must have got it right first time as the headlight arrangement hardly changed at all for the next 47 years!

Good luck with your search, and if you know little about them, try to take someone knowledgeable with you if you go to view one. Thumbs Up

As above late late 2a’s with headlights in the wings are cool, and to book mark Slideywindows early one I’ve got one of the last (not Diddy, a 109 tucked away safely Wink )
