Gearbox issues
Was out for a nice dive over the weekend and comming home from Dartmoor when I had trouble engaging all gears...

My partner heard a 'rattle' sound comming from the gearbox just prior to when the problem started
it felt as if the gate for the gears was in the wrong position and that the leaver was not able to follow the normal line to select the gear. Crying or Very sad

After stopping and wiggling the gear stick with the engine stoped the gears were back to normal and easy to engage for a while but intermittantly caused issues with all gears again.

The clutch seems to be working fine as the engine would drop revs when clutch applied and no 'crucnhing' of gears when trying to select.
My partner took it into the local independant who was up front and said that they couldnt do the job due to the size of the gearbox etc, so have it booked into the main dealers for later in the month...

Sounds like I'll have a nice bill wating for me when I get home! Big Cry Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html

I think you should not get revs dropping. The Puma friction plate has a central damper to reduce the noise of input shaft at idle speed. So, it could be that the friction plate is gone or you got a problem in some of the upper shaft bearings (unlikely). IMHO of course.

Did you check the fluid level of the clutch pump? Puma 110" SW

Hi Mike
I seem to belive your theory is probably correct! it isnt the clutch as far as I can make out .. so hope this is a one time fix! (but it is a landrover so anything can happen!)
Whistle

Hi MK
.. i didnt explain that correctly ... I was refering to using engine breaking and the engine disengaging when applying the clutch ... yep all the fluids are normal ...

it's off to the main dealers later in the week - but as I'm out at work I can only wait for their diagnosis... Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html

Could be the selector gate mechanism. Loads have been known to fail. Fairly easy fix under warranty. Cured my problem. Good luck.

Had the wagon looked at by Roger Youngs in Saltash- tech chap took 30 secs to say it was a clutch issue - so its going in this week for a new clutch (@£706! Big Cry ) and only 4 hrs to do the work.

They are also going to do a free upgrade my software as a standard Landrover issue upgrade ...somthing to do with power
so we'll see how it all goes .... watch this space!!

Thats a nightmare mate. Is that your first clutch? How many miles are on it?

Do you always go back to the dealer? I have used a good Indy near Falmouth. Not sure their experience with TDCis, but im sure they are up to speed. Current:D4 HSE

Hi Rob.
yep first clutch - only 53k on the clock on an 07 plate, Embarassed
I saw the clutch once it was out and it had one of the little 'inside' spings rattling round the thing causing some issues, and even I could see the damage on the plates - so better out than in.
At lest can trust it now! Cool
I normaly use independants in Bude and they do a great job, but they said that the clutch/gearbox was to big a job for them - so had to take it to the main dealers
Having said that - I couldn't fault Roger Youngs - the mech took the time to show me the issue, pointing out other faults that they had found caused by work from another main dealer ..... Whistle
yep it cost an arm and a leg - but it drives soooooo much better! I now know what the gears should be !!

Hi wyvern
Do you happen to have a code for the latest clutch? I need mine doing out of warranty and don't trust my local LR-Ford dealer to fit the latest version. They've caused so many faults i might even fit it myself. Thumbs Up 130 crew cab

Hi Parktag
the number on the bill is 'LLR012199' (P) clutch £205.26
took a total of 5 hrs (with a couple of other little niggles to sort out as above)
hope that helps Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html

Well like you say at least you cant trust it. There is something not right with my clutch/flywheel, but as its expensive to repair, i wont do it until its completly gone. Mine only has 60k on it as well! Current:D4 HSE
