Is it possible to buy a new drivers door lock barrel to fit the existing key?
2007 Hard Top/Puma 2.4-no central locking and no alarm fitted Drivers door lock barrel damaged/smashed during attempted vehicle theft. Obviously the reason for asking is to keep all the locks the same and just use the same key. I've searched and Google'd and can find people suggesting this is possible but nothing as to exactly how to do this. For example here- http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic48704.html I have the original metal tag that was supplied with the vehicle with the key number stamped on it (I am the original purchaser/owner). I've contacted my local Land Rover dealer but they could only offer a new door barrel which would have a different key. Has anyone done this? If not from Land Rover is it possible to buy a new door lock barrrel and have someone modify it to fit the existing key? It's possible the original, damaged barrel could be used to transfer the 'tumblers' into a new barrel although I haven't tried to remove this yet-only the top part of the lock barrel has been knocked out, the remainder is still in the door but I don't know yet in what condition. Lastly, any part numbers please. I think the correct part number for the single door barrel is CWC500190 but not certain. If I did need to change all the locks to keep the use of a single key could someone give me the correct part number for the four locks (Ignition, two front doors and the rear door). Any assistance much appreciated-thanks This is speculation but it's possible the ignition steering lock guard I fitted just after purchase prevented the theft? In 2007 there was a company near me in the north-east called Kiltech who made the 'Lockshield' which is a robust metal cover fitted around the ignition lock. At the time the X-engineering Defend Column Lock wasn't in production. It looks like Kiltech are no longer operating although the website is still live? http://www.kiltech.co.uk Anyway, after the police finished fingerprinting this morning I had a look at the damage and apart from the drivers door lock there is minimal interference. I think the Kiltech cover around the ignition lock made the thieves unscrew the steering column plastic covers to further check if it could be removed-I'm amazed the covers were unscrewed and not just broken off-then maybe they gave up when they saw access to the ignition lock was difficult with the Kiltech guard? with key number and this part number CWC000020H go LRJ parts you may be in luck or lease time will be spent with Lock and keys, with steering column lock, 2 door barrel / 2 keys, basic lock. or better still 3 door barrel and new part number see below

Replacement lock set is LR052049 - you'll get ignition lock plus three barrels to do both doors & rear door. Your door lock is FUBAR, you won't be able to salvage tumblers from that I don't think, looks like you may need a new handle too? Like that ignition protector

Many thanks for replies-
I used part number CWC000020H search for possible lock barrel to fit existing key. With part number it does seem this maybe a past offering in Land Rover portfolio? I've sent message to a Land Rover parts supplier who is showing this on their website-awaiting reply/info. The suggestion less grief/time for me to just swap complete lock set is perhaps easiest option-I would agree. Using LR052049 I looked for ignition and three locks but this shows ignition and two locks? Nevermind, it helped with search and I discovered LR052050, now replaced with LR077438 for ignition plus three locks/barrels. I'm guessing LR077438 is what I need, any confirmation? To add to my story and theft protection. I knew the alarm wiring was already in place although no alarm fitted. When I fitted the Kiltech Lockshield I moved the alarm transducer coil to sit above the ignition barrel get the plate fitted. After an earlier theft (12 years ago, TD5, never seen again) I decided physical deterrent was my choice. As well as the ignition shield fitted 11 years ago I have used a wheel clamp-see photo. I bought a Bulldog CA2000C Centaur Wheel Clamp (there's a larger CA2500 but the CA2000C fits the narrow 7.50x16's no bother) https://www.bulldogsecure.com/view/bulldog...-clamp/109 This is a hefty thing and can be a nuisance if you need to take on/off every day. Nevertheless, I've had no problems for the last 11 years since using it, not even any attempted theft. It's very visual, fitted to front drivers side wheel. I do recommend it. In the last few weeks there's been building work at my house and I didn't clamber around the scaffolding each day to put the wheel clamp back on-and, if I'm honest, a bit of complacency as well. So, lesson learnt, and wheel clamp back on. Bulldog CA2000C Centaur Wheel Clamp-7.50x16 tyres Click image to enlarge |

Apologies - the part number for the lock set I used earlier was indeed the wrong one
Looked at the invoices I have and the part number for the ignition plus 3 barrels (post 2A VIN) is LR077438. When you replace the door locks you need to retrieve the end piece which your old barrels are located in and fit these to the new ones - if you replace the door handle then that should come with a new end piece. Replacing the lock barrel in the rear door needs the lock mechanism removed and you will need either a small allen key of pick with a 90 degree bend in it to release the detent which can be reached through the slot in the cover. Could be putting 2 and 2 together and making 5 but sounds too much of a coincidence that you are having building work done and someone tries to pinch your Defender... |

OK-update
Land Rover parts dealer has returned with info. Part number CWC000020H is indeed for a lock barrel to match existing key number, however it's for Defender 1987-2006. There is a newer part number CWC500200H which is new lock barrel to match existing key for newer Defenders. Apparently after an order is placed Land Rover use vehicle VIN details and match the barrel to the existing key. Part/barrel is available but shows as "out of stock" on Land Rover portal with no delivery date. However, Land Rover parts dealer is prepared to place order then contact Land Rover for estimated delivery date. I said I'm prepared to wait-and we've agreed a rough time period where I can cancel if the part doesn't appear. I don't mind waiting, the drivers door will lock/unlock from the inside reaching across from undamaged passenger door. When I have more info I'll post again Thanks again to those who contributed, especially part numbers and advice on fitting the parts Chris PS Her-indoors also suspicious of builders, but she also has just about anyone else included.... |

Has the dealer given you a price for the special order lock? The complete set is about £85, something to consider maybe?

Price is.........£64.79 incl vat.
Price was something I considered before ordering......but decided to go ahead. Cheapest prices for single lock barrel were around about £13......but with a different key of course to mine. I phoned local Land Rover dealer (Stratstone) and his price for single lock barrel (genuine Land Rover) was £65.45 incl vat I'd looked at full lock sets (ignition, three lock barrels) which although seem a bargain compared to buying the matching lock barrel I only have the one damaged lock, I don't actually need the extra locks. I would also have to change them all as well to get back to using just the same key. Of course if the lock barrel to match existing key turns out to be no longer available then full lock set change-out will be the option to retain using just a single key. I haven't included the details of the Land Rover parts supplier in my posts because it's not a successful conclusion yet, especially as the part is 'out of stock' with Land Rover but I will complete the story with an ending......to be continued Cheers Chris |

I wondered who "LRJ parts" are......I Googled it on your first post but it comes up with somebody obscure in the north-east (my part of the world) so didn't pursue. Now realise Westover Land Rover.
I won't be waiting five years, we've agreed a shorter interval and quite happy to wait as the Land Rover parts supplier has been very helpful, only fair to give him the chance. I had thought about buying just the one new lock barrel and swapping/fitting this to the undamaged passenger door then using the new 'odd key' only on the passenger door but (dorsetsmith) another clever idea-I shall consider this depending on outcome of matching lock barrel Cheers Chris |
