I can't really offer much help other than to say mine does the same Stefan, with the 1.22 kit in. I guess i'm about at about 10,000 miles since I had the ratio's changed - i'm not 100% sure if its coming from the R380 or the transfer box if I'm honest.
Its not a terribly loud noise though, in the grand scheme of things at 70mph 2005 Td5 90 XS 1989 V8 110 CSW |

Haha ok that's reassuring. My whine isn't exactly significant compared to the total noise at 70mph as you say but I feel like if there is a noise I can reduce it might help the overall headache on the motorway.

He said there's not much he can think of without seeing the box. I did go out this morning and gave the gear and good two handed shake and there is possibly a tiny bit of play in it. I might try tightening the nut and nats and see if it dissapears.

was the new gear kit you fitted the later type (LT230Q) or the older type (LT230T)?
I believe the later LT230s had modified tooth profile to make them a little less noisy. I was wondering if the kit you fitted was the older tooth style? Description from the rebuild manual: 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread |

Snap. I've had a whine for 20k plus miles on my 1.2. I'm waiting for it to get worse or something to fail. I'd guess it's ever so slightly worse but it just keeps going 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

So I had a tinker this weekend. I figured I would try and get a bit more on the intermediate shaft nut. There was no free play or wobble on the gear but Dave said it's very difficult to overtighten them. Out came the big breaker bar and I gave the nut a heave. As you can see the old peen mark in the picture it went a touch then stopped dead and would not budge any more. I checked the intermediate gear would still turn freely which it did.
Click image to enlarge To tighten the nut I had to remove the prop and handbrake drum. As a result the whine has been reduced to a negligible level, I'm not sure if it the tranny box or just general transmission noise. So I'm pretty happy with the result. Re peening the nut isn't ideal in situ but I got a bit of a dink in it with a screwdriver but may try to improve it on the weekend. |
