I will be holidaying in the lakes shortly and while I have visited Cumbria a few times and seen most of the popular visitor attractions, I wonder if anyone who lives there knows of any secret places where tourists do not know about. In addition, any good places to eat preferably that are also dog-friendly, as I will have my two border collies with me.
I am ideally looking for places that I can drive to rather than a hike, as I will have my wife and daughter with me who are not up to long climbs or mile plus walks. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at.. http://www.youtube.com/user/conwy1 |

Hmmm - the Lakes will be rammed for the summer soon. All the "honeypots" will be rammed. As a relative local I tend to avoid travelling (by car) ta the busy times. If I am going hillwalking I try to be super-early whilst all the B&B'er tourists are still having their full breakfasts Being parked and away before 9 is a good idea.
It's a good idea to avoid the busy routes. For instance the A591 is the "usual" route from the M6 into Windermere (from the South East), but the A5074 is usually relatively quiet (and picturesque) I love visiting the Britannia at Elterwater...lovely to sit outside and eat...their Ploughmans Lunch is fab! (but it can get very busy). Dog-friendly tho... Lucy's is one of my fave restaurants http://www.lucysofambleside.co.uk/ (but it is touristy) The Punchbowl Inn at Crosthwaite gets good reviews Silverdale Inn - great food http://www.thesilverdalehotel.co.uk/ Woodies: https://www.facebook.com/WoodiesSilverdale/ (2 places local to me!) Cartmel has a wealth of lovely places to eat and stay Doi Intanon Thai Restaurant Ambleside - excellent food and surroundings Old Keswickian Chippy, Keswick...always excellent... You maybe know all these - they are hardly "off the beaten track" - but I like them! Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

Thanks for the info I will give the eating places a try also Wasdale Head.
The chippy at Keswick I have bought fish and chips from in the past and have to agree it is excellent once you have queued, especially in the long line that forms inside and outside on Market day. Setting out tomorrow and hoping for sunshine next week as when I visit Cumbria it usually pours down For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at.. http://www.youtube.com/user/conwy1 |
