Canada 1999 Defender 110 Td5 CSW Orkney Grey
1999 TD5 defender not starting
Seems like a common topic but my truck was working great this morning and after a short trip to load up our mountain bikes the truck wouldn’t start. The battery is perfect. When the key is turned there is one pathetic attempt at the engine to turn over and it then gives up.

Is this the starter? It has not been changed in 18 years... 1999 Defender 110

Worth checking out the contacts in the starter. Getting the starter off and on is a little bit stretching, but changing the contacts is pretty straightforward.

probably the starter.

If you give the solenoid a whack and it starts working then it's only a matter of time before it goes totally. Also check the little spindly wire that triggers the solenoid. Mine fell off recently due to corrosion but if yours is still hanging on it might give enough voltage for a few pathetic attempts 2013 Discovery 4 HSE Lux | 2001 Defender 90 TD5 | 2007 Prodrive RB320

Check your battery terminals are tight especially the earth post. Then check the other side of the cables. Ie negative to chassis and positive on the starter motor.

If engine trys to turn over it's Not the starter solenoid. If it does not turn over but just makes a clicking noise it's probably the solenoid contacts.
Cheap as chips to replace.1/4 hour job however top bolt on starter " 14 or 15mm can't remember" is a little fiddly to get at .The other 2 are 13mm and easy.
Make sure you disconnect your battery first other wise you'll be welding under there if you short the positive.

It was towed to a garage and when it got there it started right away. I then replaced the battery as the old one was extremely old and thought it might be a bad cell.

Was starting fine for a week now its doing it again. it "feels" like its a battery issue as the engine will turn over with a weak effort then everything dies.

I'm going to look at the battery connections again tonight and then try and see if I can find the crank position sensor and finally look at the loom... 1999 Defender 110

I finally found the solution to the starter turning over slowly. The starter was pulling 5V. I went through all the wiring again and it looks like when my overdrive was installed the -ve lead wasn't attached to engine block as well as it could have been. I redid the wiring and low and behold the starter now draws 0.5V and the engine starts in less than a second. 1999 Defender 110

Defender not starting
Happened to me a few years ago - simple solution when it was suggested was to change the battery in the key fob. The chip wasn't sending a signal to the ignition switch. All sorted. ...and a D4 (2011)
....and an MX5 (2002)
....and a Hayter Heritage 30" (2010)
....and a Rover 650E with a detachable mulcher - but the last two are mowers. (2010)
