300 TDi Rocker Shaft snapped
The rocker shaft snapped on my 300Tdi this week. Damaged the rocker clamp and pulled the thread out of the head at the rear. Order all the new bits and all was going well until I fitted the rockers. The new rocker clamps didn’t fit properly. After a bit of investigating I found the hole in one of the rocker clamps wasn’t drilled square to the bottom face and also the posts are shorter than the originals. Therefore I think some genuine parts will be ordered next week as I think the current parts will put a bend in the new rocker shaft and I will have the same issue in the near future. Has anyone else experienced this?

I've experienced a broken rocker shaft on a 300. Usually follows a broken cam belt. I bought a genuine shaft and didn't have a problem.

I think the rear stud thread in the head has yielded. This has then reduced the clamp load on the post clamp and caused it to move about. Finally the head thread has sheared and this has caused the rocker shaft to break. I have noticed a drop in performance but thought it was just me. There is no piston to valve contact. Cam belt hasn’t failed. Did have a high rev incident where I had to change down quite quickly to make a corner where they had blocked a road for roadworks just over the brow of a hill so could have been that but the slight loss of performance was already there so maybe it was a combination of the two.

Yup, I had to helicoil 2 of mine that had stripped in the head. Mine broke a few months after cam belt failure and I've read on forums of a least 2 or 3 other incidences so it's by no means unknown.
It was chuffing out of the RAI because of the valve overlap which those with me at the time found very entertaining 😉
