I managed to remove and re-stick one recently by carefully working my way around with a modelling knife, slicing through the mastic as I went. This leaves mastic on both the door and the shedder and when pressed back together, they stick perfectly. Darren

They're only about £8 a side from Land Rover and come complete with new glue/sealant pre-applied. I wouldn't bother trying to remove with a view to reusing. It can be done, but they tear easily so it means spending a lot of time doing it just for the sake of £8 - depends how much you value your time.
You also have to store them carefully when you put them down to do the work, as the mastic stuff on them sticks like ![]() If it's on a car I've not worked on before I'll usually order a new shedder before I take the door apart, because you're bound to find someone has been there before and ripped holes in it. |

Thanks , I’ll order a spare. The reason I asked about reuse ability is that I have recurring problem in the door that might need multiple trips into the door casing. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Whilst called water shedder what's its purpose?
Besides the obvious surely it can't be that effective? Looks more to me like a poor attempt at soundproofing foam to me. I remember taking mine off and refitting no problem, and the mastic stuff is very sticky non setting if I remember rightly. Chillin In The Backwoods🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

The purpose is to stop water that enters the door along the glass seal from entering the vehicle, by deflecting it to the drain holes at the bottom of the door (but being a Landrover the holes ingeniously discharge into the vehicle).

You'd have thought LR would try and keep water out in the beginning rather than designing the seals to allow it in and into the door inner and though drain holes.
I'm going to have to mess around with these at some point shortly to fit some Dynamat in the doors. Does anyone know what the sticky sealant is? Is it what used to be called Dum dum a not setting putty style sealant? Chillin In The Backwoods🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

Using water shedders isn't a LR thing. Most car doors with wind up windows have them fitted in one form or another. Darren

As LandRoverAnorak says, pretty much every car has them. Manufacturers used to just use polythene sheeting, but most have moved to this foam material now. Quite possibly for it's sound/thermal insulation properties.
Another issue with the Defender doors is the scraper seals on the drop glass have big gaps at either end. I filled mine with non-setting windscreen sealant stops most of the water running into the doors.
It's similar, although I don't think actual DumDum is actually made anymore. I bought a roll of butyl based stuff off ebay.https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Butyl-Tape-Strip-Bolt-On-Panel-Sealer-Bonding-Vans-Cars-Roof-/332541220739?_trksid=p2349526.m4383.l4275.c10
You can always leave it off until you've fixed the problem. If you're taking the door card on and off a lot, there's a good chance the clips will pull their retainers out of the back of the card too. It's about £50 for a new door card from Land Rover. |

I replaced mine with clear polythene sheet when mine ripped. Most vehicles use polythene rather than foam, much more resilient.

I also have found it easier over the years to leave the water shedder stuck to the door and make a clean straight incision with a knife if I need access to the door internals. The incision can them be taped up with black nasty (duct tape) afterwards.

I didn't know that, interesting, I only ever came across polythene on others so this foam stuff is quite new to me. ![]() ⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

They may well be polythene (they were on earlier Land Rovers, too) but they do the same job. They don't stop water getting into the door past the window seals. Darren
