well she's now 8 so the inevitable first breakdown was long overdue..
overtaking a truck on the m6 out of carlisle towards the lakes, into limp mode, temp gauge up and lots of steam pulled over immediately... pulled over, refiled the coolant system pretty much lost 2+ litres... got about another mile (just to try and get somewhere safer) gauge went up again so left it, called the AA.. all guesses leading to the head gasket i suppose. cant see any leaks on any pipes. |

Probably handles a little better too!! And I don't mean the 109
Part of me always thinks V8 are better in sports cars but then I kick myself that Defenders are not rational things and I'd love V8 Defender! yeah i just dumped it back at home,
Went over the lakes in the Audi and will be back tomorrow night to start the investigation... When it cooled down and the AA man put his pressure tester thing on the coolant tank, we didn't have any leaks... seems as it cooled it sealed but this was a quick diagnosis. transits used to have a habit of wearing through coolant hoses. They'd go pop and dump the coolant mist all over the underside.

Got similar problem. Fixed leakages, changed thermostat. Still limp-mode when pulling hard. They currently dissamble head for gasket inspection/change. Hope there will be a finding at the gasket, otherwise new head needed. |

I could be barking up the wrong tree, and as suggested could be the head but I had the same symptoms with the Waterpump too.
When hot it would expand and leak from the gasket between the two castings bolted together. When cold it would pretty much stop, but would always start when hot. On visual inspection no real leak trace visible, barely tightened it and holed that would sort it and it done it again. Another new Waterpump and problem solved. Pressure test wasn't conclusive due to the cold / hot issue. But you are probably right it may well be the head. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

I'll start the process tomorrow afternoon...
it was impossible to tell obviously where the water was going / coming as you can see in the pics... it was a typical cumbrian day, although last two days have been rather nice. maybe EGR cooler? i don't know whats really in what location yet... but i think it was coming from around the coolant tank area. |

There are a couple of oil cooler hoses that run over the top of the bell housing along side the EGR cooler.
