hello,

can i put a rear axle of a defender 300tdi under my 90 (1986) ?

No major changes as they are both coil sprung and have the same track. The 110 rear axle from a 300tdi will have the stronger Salisbury diff, should be the same ratio though, but worth checking.

If you put a Salisbury under the 90 you'll find the rear prop will be very short. Best get one from a 90, discovery or old Range Rover, then you can use the existing Propshaft.

Salisbury into a 90 needs the prop shortening by 1 3/4" (43mm ish) but as said, ends up quite short and prone to vibrations.

a 4 pin diff with HD shafts (or even a later Rover type 110 axle) will give similar strength to the salisbury, albiet without the weight carrying capacity.

Sorry to hijack this thread Bert,
I have a 110 Salisbury axle that I was going to fit to my future 90 trayback for off roading.
I knew I'd have to shorten a prop so was going to use a shortened Disco II front prop due to it being a double cardon which I thought would be better for vibration and articulation as it will be running a 5" lift.
Can anyone offer any advice on this please, i.e. is this feasible and will it work as I'm now thinking the diff nose will be too long for a decent prop angle even with the double cardon ??

If you are going to build a trayback, why not put the axle a bit further to the back? Roel

You can swap Land Rover axels from a Defender 90 and Range Rover and Discovery 1 without modifications
Only when you install a salesabury axel you have to shorten the propshaft.

Unless it’s a 300 Tdi Discovery axle and you’ll need to change to the 4 bolt drive flange instead of the rubber doughnut style on the diff.

There is a brake pressure restrictor for the rear axle on the right chassis leg or am I mistaken? Are they the same for drum and disc brakes? Roel
