Hi Steve
Not that I am aware of. Without getting too technical a 'walkie talkie' operates on simplex or half duplex, which means when you press the PTT button only one person can talk. The press to talk button is then released to allow the other person to talk and you to hear. Your best bet is to get a transceiver with VOX. VOX - Voice Activated Transmit is a feature that allows you to use your two-way radio hands-free. As you speak the transmit is activated and the other person (s) can hear you. When you stop speaking the transmit goes to standby allowing you to hear any replies. 2007 TD5 90 Hard Top |

Sorry I have to ask, why do you need a walkie talkie if you're only 2m apart?

You can certainly get PMR446 radios which support Vox (voice switching), speak and they transmit. Very popular with the motorcycle community amongst others, or anyone who needs to use a radio hands-free.
The cheap radios probably don't support this, but better ones do. |

Because you're in a Defender with such high background noise levels you can't hear each other? |

Look at Bluetooth motorbike intercoms, that's what we use on challenge events, allow the driver and navigator to talk to each other in full duplex. Range of around 500 metres and rechargeable.
They can be mounted on a military style headset when not wearing a helmet... Click image to enlarge http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

Was just going to say look at biker headsets.
@Davew, those PRR headsets arent cheap. I used 2 when I competed. A complete functioning PRR headset is somewhere around £400 each. I had to wait until the Sigs Tp had 2 broken sets before I could get some 110 D250 SE HT 110 USW SOLD RRE HSE Dynamic Gone, wife killed it VOLVO XC60 R Dynamic with some toys Polaris RZR 900XP SOLD |

@walfy Fortunately you can get the Bowman headsets for around £15-£20 a piece, new from a number of places.
Search for Tactical Bowman Elite II on ebay or Amazon, sold for airsoft use for some reason ! I expect they'll be too cheap for military use, as a friend of mine (who sold stuff to the MOD for a living) used to say, you have to multiply the price by at least 10 for the MOD or they won't believe it's any good... You can pay more for second hand surplus items than new items on Ebay/Amazon. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

Thanks all for the replies - very helpful as always!
@JOW240725 The reason for the two meters is that we often have two guys fitting - one inside a building, one outside so communication becomes and issue when you're trying to line things up! 2002 Defender 110 CSW TD5 |
