My 110 is here!!!
I've just taken delivery of my new toy... A spanking new 110 XS CSW in Fuji White! Mr. Green

The modifications have started already, so will post some pics when it's presentable, as it's just standard looking right now.

Today, is a good day! Very Happy

Understood now!!! Mine is a USW so should have spotted that. Is the rumour true however that all MY11 defender models are now classed as commercial?

Given the joined up government we've been promised you will be shocked to find out that the VAT folks and the Benefit in Kind folks, despite being in the same cash relieving department, have different views.

All Defenders are now commercial from a VAT point of view so a business can buy a 110 SW XS (or whatever) and claim the VAT back but it would be a car when it comes to Benefit in Kind so you would be taxed at your tax rate x 35% of the car's list price (including extras). A USW is a commercial vehicle through and through (separate load area without windows with a load carrying capacity > 1 tonne) and so yes you can claim VAT back but the benefit in kind is you tax rate x benefit of £3000. Both attract the cheaper "commercial" road tax.

Assume you spend £30k and are taxed at 22% (is that what basic rate is...?)

XS SW 30000 * 35% * 22% = £2310 p.a. personal tax bill
XS USW 3000 * 22% = £660 p.a. personal tax bill

If you have a fuel card the savings are similarly attractive.

Obviously anyone buying should check this but it is my understanding.

Cheers
C

Benefit in Kind Tax - The reclassification of the Station Wagon derivatives does not change anything as far as Benefit in Kind (BiK) tax is concerned. 90 and 110 Station Wagons will continue to be treated as a passenger vehicle while the 110 Utility Wagon meets the criteria to be considered as a commercial vehicle for BiK purposes. All other derivatives are considered as commercial vehicles.

VAT – Again, the reclassification of Station Wagon derivatives does not change anything as far as VAT status is concerned. The 90 Station Wagon will continue to be treated as a passenger vehicle, while the 110 Station Wagon and 110 Utility Wagon meet the criteria to be considered as commercial vehicles for VAT purposes due to their 1,000kg payload capability. All other derivatives are considered as commercial vehicles.

James Thumbs Up

Sounds so stupid it must be true!! Rolling with laughter

Still to a degree I am glad, as it means that my choice of USW still stands - not that I would swap it for all the mud in the world!!
