If you have power steering you can get a moaning noise, but only on full lock. You are advised not to maintain full lock due to the pressure in the PS pump. If you are getting moaning at other times when steering, then check the PS fluid level, but I would suspect a deteriorating pump.
I am certain others will provide more expert advice. |

If you get the noise on full lock, it's probably the tyre rubbing the radius arms. You can adjust this with the steering bolt. a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

It can be heard when stationary also, so I could rule the tyre rubbing out I think, It sounds from what is being said here its the power steering fluid or pump......Maybe.....Seems to be worse in reverse and near full lock, but that could be just a coincidence.....

Try running the engine without belt and see if the noise disappears. It could be the power steering Or perhaps water pump. a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

Turns out the fluid level was low due to a small leak in the steering box, garage topped it up for free and will replace the steering box for about 250 quid next month when it’s due for MOT and service.......
