Part number for a Puma is QME500270.
Everything you say about TD5 and Puma parts is correct , the heatshield is fitted due to the proximity of the shaft to the exhaust and cat on the RHD vehicle. TD5 part number is QME500031. |

Thanks Blackwolf, very much appreciated. As I’ve got a left hand drive defender I’m good to go with the TD5 part? Do I need to order a LHD specific steering assay? Sorry if that’s a dumb question just want to make sure! Anything else I should be changing? Thanks again.

I doubt that there is a LHD/RHD difference, but it would be sensible to check an online parts listing.

Just a question. Are you sure it’s the lower steering column?
Because I’ve never heard that the steering column is the culprit. Normally when you’re having some play in the steering it’s the steering box you need to replace. a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover |

They do wear, although it is not a particularly common problem. The easiest way to check is to put your hand firmly over the UJ on the shaft you want to check and get an assistant (unless you have very long arms when you can do it yourself) to rock the steering wheel. You will immediately feel any movement.
