2 altenators on a td5, is that possible?
I think that the Altenator is placed wrong on a td5. I kil... ehh I destr..... ehh, Two altenators stopped working (sounds better) with me already probably while driving off-road and through some water.
The altenators are placed low and it is a bitch to get to so I was thinking to place one at the airconditioning compressor spot. To make life easy I thought first to reinstall the broken altenator with the vacuum pump back on the original spot. So then I don't have to change the oil and vacuum lines.
But then I thought why not run 2 altenators? I was thinking to use 2 off the standard td5 altenators.

So is this possible? And if not why not?

As a benifit next to that I have a automatic back-up I will have more power while winching.

Second question: Are there other cars around that use the same altenator? So I might find one cheaper. Roel

this set up uses Alt from tdi300 engine but has no vac pump and will need dc load to work with i.e. second battery

An interesting line of thought.

As dorsetsmith has pointed out, fitting a second alternator to the TD5 is easy, courtesy of Gwyn Lewis, provided that you don't have a/c.

I am not aware of any other application of the TD5 alternator, and personally have always considered that the alternator with a vac pump stuck on the front is a bad idea. I have replaced two on my 200,000+ mile TD5 Disco, and in both cases the failure was due to oil leaking from the pump into the alternator. It also seems to be impossible to get overhaul parts for these alternators - although I was able to find replacement brushes, when I last looked it was impossible to buy slip rings to overhaul a worn alternator.

I wonder if an alternative approach would be to ditch the vac pump and replace it with something else (an electric one, perhaps), and then fit one or two standard alternators.

Thanks Guys,

I am using 2 Optima batteries but straight connected parallel no split charge system. Land Rover used this on the Camel Trophy Discoveries so it must be good for winching power.

Can you connect both altenators to the same batteries or will this give problems?

Using an 300tdi altenator is an option. I only destroyed one off them in my CT discovery. Very Happy
Do they use the same pully standard? Roel
