Defender Security - Immobilise via inertia switch
I was pondering how to make the 110 a bit harder to steal and the inertia switch under the bonnet came to mind.

If I was to intersect one of the wires e.g. power or earth and run it back to the cab, could a simple on-off switch hidden from view inside prevent the vehicle from being started with the switch in the off position or is it a bit more technical than that?

It's a late TD5 if that makes a difference.

They got the idea of someone of here.. think it would cost around10--15 quid to source the components yourself as a one off so I font mind the profit margin...what I do think they could improve it. By increasing the length of the y connector to make it easier to hide.....as if spotted its a case of swapsy and there off... It will stop the dumb theif

Although, getting the plug off [and back on] the inertia switch was/is a bu**er of a job and, on mine, required unscrewing the switch itself. Only a thief with tiny, strong, triple joined hands could manage to swap back, I feel... but then again, they can be clever bu**ers

I dont know if the switch is open or closed when not engaged so someone who knows may comment on what happens if you simply pull out the wires from the inertia switch and join the ends thus making a circuit?Its always best to hide your security devices the best you can..prererably in plain sight!

Has anyone using this method noticed it may take longer before the engine can be started? Someone over here said so and he was annoyed by it.

I have just fitted one of these switches, easy job, getting the switch end of the wiring into the passenger compartment was a bit of a pain. The switch doesn't affect starting unless it's off which does take a while to restart once reactivated. I am going to relocate the valve in the engine bay as an extra precaution.

Unused some red solid copper coded wire taped to the actual wiring loom and pushed it downward through the bulk head grommet until I could see it through the fuse box appeture, then pulled the cable through. Complete job took about 30 mins in total, just an bit Ridley making the y connection and then finding the red wire to pull through.
