2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 CSW Alpine White
Steering column
Hello everyone, hope somebody can help me out here. My mechanic has informed me I need to replace the lower steering column on my 2007 Defender 110. He told me in Portuguese (I live abroad) and I’m pretty certain this is the part I need to replace. I’ve got a bit of movement on the steering wheel before the wheels actually turn and he did point to the part so pretty certain this is what I need.

I read on another forum that the lower steering joint assy for the Puma engine is a lot more expensive than for a TD5 and has something to do with a heat shield around the joint somewhere but other than that they are the same part!? Is that true? Also read that if you have a LHD defender then you can make do with the TD5 lower steering column part!? Again no idea if that’s the case or not?

So can anyone confirm the part number I need for the lower steering column for a 2.4 tdci engine and is there any other parts I should be replacing such as the upper steering column etc etc? Living abroad I need to make sure I buy the correct parts or it takes weeks to send back the wrong part and buy a new one so would like to make sure I buy what’s needed and replace anything else that should be replaced. Thanks in advance, Richard

Part number for a Puma is QME500270.

Everything you say about TD5 and Puma parts is correct , the heatshield is fitted due to the proximity of the shaft to the exhaust and cat on the RHD vehicle.

TD5 part number is QME500031.

Thanks Blackwolf, very much appreciated. As I’ve got a left hand drive defender I’m good to go with the TD5 part? Do I need to order a LHD specific steering assay? Sorry if that’s a dumb question just want to make sure! Anything else I should be changing? Thanks again.

I doubt that there is a LHD/RHD difference, but it would be sensible to check an online parts listing.

Just a question. Are you sure it’s the lower steering column?

Because I’ve never heard that the steering column is the culprit. Normally when you’re having some play in the steering it’s the steering box you need to replace. a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

They do wear, although it is not a particularly common problem. The easiest way to check is to put your hand firmly over the UJ on the shaft you want to check and get an assistant (unless you have very long arms when you can do it yourself) to rock the steering wheel. You will immediately feel any movement.
