The problem with the hole is that CCC don't have money to fix it, but they also don't really work with volunteers .... so the best option would seem to be a stealthy repair party. There is after all an old quarry just down the road with more stone that you could ever need...

Anderzander, I bow my cap to you Next time I'm down there I will do the same. It is a nice long lane (8.43km) to drive and the views are excellent so it would be a great shame if it use was curtailed due to misuse/damage.
