Another example though not Defender related.

I went to a local farming stockist recently for bags of fertiliser. (No point going into details).

To cut a long story short, I wanted 5x bags @ £13.99. £69.95 total.
Okay, I pay no courier fees though...

Another supplier up north, £111 delivered. (What I did buy at one time.) gone up in price £10 since last year.

Now...

Another supplier again, exact same product we are talking here and on eBay £150 delivered. Shocked Shocked

Now, bearing in mind all companies need to make profit as well a double near triple profit is beyond belief.

And as Brendan had rightfully said before, free delivery doesn't exist it's inc.
And the same goes for card transaction fees, they are just added inclusive of price too. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

I'm surprised with this thread don't you normally look around at the different prices sod the mark up just look at the bottom line and then try and have a deal ! My love is 2nd hand deals more fun to find better chance of a deal .I wanted a all alloy steering guard found one on ebay £25 plus £10 P&P and good clean up and some paint and in a few weeks time will look the same as a brand new £150 item.

Really? Do you actually know their mark up?

We have just ordered some gear and we are talking about thousands of pounds worth of gear. Our trade discount is less then 15%. Now only a slight issue in this case. We have paid up front and they will now put them into production which might take a few weeks, i.e. we are expected to be a free bank loan. Now social media people expect that nasty word discount. So we are in business to make money but we have rent/rates/insurance etc to pay and try to make a profit.

Now many people have a mistaken idea of how business works and the actual expenses incurred by businesses. We have had people on various forums tell us that our profit margins on goods are 75% of actual retail price. I wish and our accountant would wet himself if it was!

Now before you ask a trader for discount what would YOU say if your employer was going to discount (i.e. reduce) your wage by 10-20%?

gilarion's comment was fair and reasonable - there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing your due diligence and comparing prices before buying.

It is also fair to say that good customer service can compensate for paying slightly more but knowing you have that safety net should things go wrong, or having a more pleasant buying experience; however, only the individual can decide how much more they are willing to pay for excellent customer service. Personally, I'd rather pay a reasonable price and have excellent customer service, which I think should be standard in business.

However, I also think it is unfair to put forward the idea that margins are universally low on products. I know quite a few people who are not manufacturers and therefore buy a product to sell on; most operate online and sell B2C. The most extreme case I know is where the seller marks the product up by over 300-400% and the lowest is 20%. Obviously even the lower margin business deem it to be worth their while to continue to trade.

The business I have most empathy for are the bricks and mortar shops, which some customers use to tyre kick the product, finding out all about it, only to then buy online at a cheaper price (due to considerably lower overheads); this I find quite sad and the reason we are loosing high street independent shops and traders. We still have a local ironmonger and hardware shop; I know he is 25%+ more expensive than shopping online but I'd rather give them the business any day of the week. Walking into the shop is like an Aladdin's cave and the owner is always on hand with a smile, advice or just general pleasantry. That has a value and imho, should be supported.

When it comes to online vs online, as gilarion said, the lines are blurred and it really does seem to boil down to price for most customers.

Shops are a lot different, and like you say, supporting a local shop makes you feel you are doing something for someone in front of you.

Online retail is the new highstreet without the emotional attachment, so if you can get it cheaper, then most folk will do that.

It costs next to nothing for me to start a website, register a company, and begin advertising Defender parts online. Checking the prices of another online shop i'll add 20% and when someone buys from me, i'll order from them, get it delivered directly from them to my customer and pocket the difference. Welcome to Ebay.

Few years back we saw a nice heavy extendable dining table and 6 colonial style bentwood chairs, in our local shop. Ooo, their nice! But £1200. Oh look, they've left a label on one of the chairs....scribble,scribble. Ring, ring, .......Told the company I was a property developer(I am), and I wanted it to dress a house for sale. £600 delivered for table and chairs, and they carried it in to the house. So impressed ,I was, that I ordered another, with different chairs, for daughter. Local shop? Not for me. People say 'money goes to money' well quite often people with money know its value, and are reluctant to part with it, knowing how useful it can be, so are 'canny'. I would get no pleasure handing over £600 x2 to a shop, just because its local.

Also needed a new chainset for my bike, now discontinued, found one for £80 +pp, but found one on e-bay, used, (but only for 20miles), exactly what I wanted, £53. Bottom bracket, one shop £25+pp, another shop, £15.99 free pp. Plus I'll sell my perfectly good Campagnolo ones and almost get my money back.
