Hi there
I leave the Defender yesterday in the dealers to sort several oil leakages that were not solved in the last check due to the lack of time. and to be checked after the trip to Patagonia. Also I had some squeek in the front brakes that I ask to check. Short history. according to the dealers, I need to change the brake pads (2nd tine after 100,000 km), but also the brake disc due an excessive wear. Ovbiously I didnt accept until check the wearing by myself. Any experience on that? It is normal? Dunno about the Defender specifically, but I think it's not unusual on recent cars to have to change the pads and the discs at the same time (happened to me with different car makes). I've been told this is because of the removal of asbestos, dunno if that's true or not.

Since the prohibition of asbestos materials brake pads have been harder-wearing, with the result that discs wear quicker. On the Rover 416 and 420 saloons that I had many years ago, the pads would last at least twice as long as the discs (at least they would have done if it wasn't for the need for new pads with every set of discs) and front discs were lasting less than 20k miles - ridiculous!
So it is an unfortunate truth that discs don't last as long as they used to. |

I've just fixed a squeek from my front discs, the noise appearing just as I relieve the brake pedal pressure as the vehicle comes to a complete halt. This noise only recently began and was sometimes accompanied by the ABS pump.
Turned out that my front left caliper was only pushing 2 pistons so only one pad was being activated. Just put my experience here in case it helps with your noise, Ed. |
