You could try the appropriately-named 'Cold War' by Jeremy Isaacs and Taylor Downing.
The Cold War IS what happened post-1945 really. The book starts by setting the scene leading up to WW2, then explains what happened next. Easy to read, well indexed so you can find what you want, and lots of pictures. I don't know if is currently in print. ISBN 0-593-04309-X |

I can certainly recommend visiting the 3 dams that the dambusters bombed and also the salt mines in Poland. Colditz is also good to visit. One thing to note is that there isn't a great deal of information about the war whilst you're actually there. What amazed me was how little room there was to manoeuvre around the dams for bombers. How any of them got out without crashing into the surrounding woodland is amazing. Also when you visit you get an idea of the scale and just how much water would have been flowing when the dams were breached.
