200tdi master/slave cylinder replacement
Well my 110 decided that the perfect timing to sh*t clutch fluid was during a freak snow storm. Luckily it did it while parked at the house.

I'm trying to keep the replacement as quick as possible due to the nasty weather (no garage). Any tips/tricks I should be looking out for? I didn't see any fluid by the master (which is relatively new) so I'm assuming it is the slave, but I'll be replacing both while I'm at it. I'm running a Red Booster so the master can come off in just a few minutes without pulling the clutch tower out (yay!).

Can the slave cylinder come off without dropping the exhaust? It looks pretty tight.

thx

I can't remember re the exhaust & mine wasn't standard anyway, but I do remember it being a pig and eventually rotating the slave so the bleed was at the bottom and reverse bleeding it with a old style oil can!

Possibly use an easi bleed now though.....

Good luck in the snow!

Interesting day today -- all hydraulics related.

First inspected my SO's car to determine why the brakes were squeaking. Caliper slide pins rusted solid and took the inner pad with it. Since the cylinder is likely rusted from not properly moving two new caliper sets will be going on this coming week.

Secondly I replaced both the master and slave on the 110. Since I have a Red Booster the master comes on and off in a couple of minutes (booster is worth it just for that).

I can confirm that the slave can come off without taking anything else off. An extension, swivel, and a 3/8 rechargeable ratchet (greatest invention ever) made short work getting it off. A bit fiddly getting it back in, but wasn't too bad other than the mess. It was definitely leaking into the bellhousing which is probably why I was getting a slipping clutch at time as well.

However I cannot for the life of me get it bled properly. I can push fluid through it with no issues but pedal pressure doesn't improve one bit (this is without vacuum for the RB).

Any thoughts?

Did you install the slave with the bleed nipple at the top?

I’ve never managed to get the full pedal on mine by bleeding, however you can get enough to make it work. Then over say 20-30 miles the rest self-bleeds.

Raising the front of the vehicle helps, if it’s parked nose-down it will be a pig to bleed.

I'll jack the front up and give it a try. Thankfully I did install the bleed nipple the right way up Very Happy

If you are THE Retroanaconda, a big thanks for your tech articles on the TD5 instrument upgrade. I used your resources to do mine. Just have the wiper and rear fog lamp wiring left to go on the full TD5 update.

You’re welcome. It’s a great improvement, mine have been in for coming up to 9 years now with no problems.

Your vehicle sounds almost identical to my 110 - it also being a 1993 county station wagon in red.

Finally got it properly bled. It was a battle, but learned quite a bit.

I pulled the slave off and it appears that cylinder may have been retracted too far to actuate. It also helped bleeding it while hanging upside down.

Put it back in and viola! <--- ignore the fact that I had to do it twice as the shim fell off without me noticing the first time Embarassed

Pressure bleeders are worth the investment. Wink
