300TDi Doesn't start
Hi All
I have a 1997 300TDi 90 Defender CSW and I am still having issues with it failing to start.
Every so often I can turn the ignition key and I get nothing. The relay in the fusebox is definately working. The last time this happended it wouldn't turn over so I left it overnight. I then went back in the morning and shorted between the live to the starter, bypassing the solenoid. The starter span over without any issues. I then went back to the ignition and turned the key, there was a clunk and then the starter kicked in and started the vehicle. I had 12V down to the solenoid wire before I did this so I assumed that it was a sticky solenoid and replaced the complete starter assembly. This has been working great and is much improved over the old starter. Unfortunately, today it did it again. after about 6-8 attempts it started again and has been OK since.
I have replaced the battery, starter and ignition switch but the problem still exists.
I havn't checked the earths but as it the starter span over easily when I shorted it I assumed the earths are OK.
I am now suspecting it could be the spider but with 12 volts down the solenoid wire it may not be.
I do have an intermittent issue with the spotlights that have been fitted and suspect the relay on the inner wing.
Does anyone have any ideas about the starting issue??

I sometimes get this, changed the starter motor when it first happened but has since done it again, when i first got it i changed all the locks so they worked off one key but the ignition switch wasnt genuine ( i dont think any way) so that going to be my next port of call but so far it only happens every now and then

Have you checked all the wires /cables to the starter? I had a very similar issue, with intermittent failure to start. Turns out a loose connector plug on one of the wires to the starter. I re-crimped all the wires to the starter and cleaned all contacts and been fine since.

Might be a dead spot on the armature

Either flat spot on the starter cog, or (as I found) a lose / corroded / not connecting earth somewhere.

power going to it, but not from it to anywhere. Hence the jumps work but from the battrys doesnt. TY&GN
