OK, I know the subject comes up a fair bit but...
My Defender came with a roof tent, it's an 'Armadillo', it looks fairly well made but obviously a few years old and showing signs of use etc. Now the wife is already a reluctant camper so the idea of sleeping in a slightly musty tent is not filling her with glee! 
So, I've been thinking about getting a new tent (I could probably sell the one I have to offset some the cost). I've been looking at something like the Hannibal 1.2 or Howling Moon 1.4 Are these worth the money compared to some of the cheaper makes available? Another idea is to ditch the roof tent idea altogether and get a decent ground tent but I do like the idea of the Land Rover/Roof tent combo bearing in mind I could have just bought a nice car and stay in a hotel  |

We had a 1.4 Howling Moon for a number of years. Great piece of kit and worth the money, although don't know how much they are now.
Many pro's and con's and its been covered many times before. The biggest bug bear we had was once all set up with awning it was a bit of a PITA if you wanted to go out for the day in the LR. 2007 TD5 90 Hard Top |

if I had no kids and it was purely a tent for 2, I'd have a hard top, purely for speed and ease.

Were looking at a roof tent too but have shied away from a hard top as the access is a pita if it's raining, plus you're seperated from the landy..soft top with awning seems best for us atm

With my current set up the tent opens to the side (G4 rack with cut out) access when it's raining is a bit of a concern,

Pete, have a look at the Nakatanenga Roof Lodge Evolution tents. They are made in Germany and have a few touches that other makes do not, such as an anti condensation mat as standard.

If you want to be able to leave the campsite for a lovely diner with the wife in town, without having to pack up your tent?

Heck yes absolutely superior to roof tents... if for the single reason that when you realise you have forgotten the milk you do not have to collapse the tent before trekking to find the nearest shop. Second one that is dear to my heart is the ability to stand upright in it which when it is raining is worth its weight in gold. Love our OzTent fabulous kit. I sold my Hannibal roof tent to swap to the OzTent. Never regretted it once. |

I have an Oztent as well as a rooftent. I’ve been using the Oztent for a number of years and have been more than happy with it (if you decide on one get a fly Sheet! Makes a great tent even better!), the reason we got a roof tent was to make wild camping easier, quick set up in the evening and quick put down for a quick getaway in the morning with no need to find a largish flat stone and root free area to pitch the tent just somewhere reasonably level to park the Land Rover. If you are on a campsite or have a base camp setup where you are going off in the vehicle and returning for the night then the Oztent is the tent to go for. Our rooftent has the under annex so it’s possible to stand up and get dressed in the rain 👍
I also have a Little Eriba caravan so all bases are covered! 2010 Defender 110 Station Wagon, Santorini Black. |

i have an OZ tent and love it, works really well, and zips in to the Foxwing. that combined with the Maggi on top - what more could you ask for? Cheers
