Has anyone heard or thought about modifying the blower motor controls on a Def TD5? (or Tdi as I presume they are the same)
As standard, it has 3 settings, Off On a little bit Full on hair dryer mode! I wonder if it would be feasible to fit a more modern speed control with more than just the two switch positions. Perhaps incorporating a multi position rotary switch in place of the never used headlamp level knob? I have no idea how the motor is controlled, but I presume in a modern car it is achieved by switching a circuit with more or less resistance? Don't use a variable resistor on the dash. It will get hot enough to melt plastic.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200762259776 Though not that specific one, as I doubt 10A is sufficient for the blower motor. A PWM controller will give you full control of the fan from zero to full whack, with no loss of torque (not that that's particularly relevant in this application). |

The likes of the older Rover cars (25's etc), used a multi position switch, rather like that of the headlight levelling switch on defenders (although I'm not certain if the innards are the same,as in, current carrying capacity) and this switched the earth back through several large wire wound resistors behind the dash (well, from the factory they were poxy coils of wire, but most seem to have been changed to WW resistors after the old wire snaps off)
So you could mount something like that behind the dash, not toughing anything else so they don't melt. Here's a before & after wirewound vs. old coily things: Click image to enlarge This would give a 4 speed control (off, resistor 1, resistor2, resistor 3 then full on hairdrier mode) Can't imagine it would be hard to knock something up to fit a defender dash, especially a td5 withough headlight levelling, as you'd have somewhere to mount the switch. This is a good idea if you want to be able to have a larger selection of intermediate fan speeds between off and full. This modification will, however, not increase the speed of the fan as you only have 12v to play with and that should already be being achieved with the standard Defender switch. I seem to remember increasing the voltage to the Defender fan being discussed on this forums previously, but cannot recall the outcome.

Is there an idiots guide anywhere on how to do this mod. I think my heater is fine on full blast, but a bit more control would be nice. I am just too busy to try to work it out. But if someone had a, get A + B and do X,Y,Z and its done type guide then I would probably do it.

I've thought of opening the blower up to change the resistor value and make the lower speed a little faster - however a variable resistor would be good.
Any thoughts on where to mount the control ? |

I'm looking on a small phone screen but I like the fact that it seems to look like a factory fit. |
