2.4 Puma.
I had oil showing up on the passenger side of the engine. Oil was collecting at the front of the bellhousing and dripping on to the ground. I left it into the maindealer where they diagnosed leaking injector seals. I queried this as I thought there was too much oil showing up for this for this but they said it was a common problem so I agreed to them replacing the injector seals. Having driven it home on Tuesday I checked underneath and sure enough there it was.... oil collecting on the front of the bell housing. I cleaned it off but it is back today. Before I contact the dealer tomorrow has anyone any suggestions as to where the leak could be? The clutch was also replaced so they got a good look at the back of the engine. I asked if any of the seals here were gone but they said no. I have been happy with their work in the past but this has not been their finest hour. Though it is a 2008 2.4 Puma the engine was replaced by them in 2014 owing to the PCJ problem. My EGR valve was also replaced. Your suspicion of the inlet manifold seems right to me but it is hard to tell with all of the pipework in place. The mechanic must have gone in with a mind set of the injector seals as THE fault and didn't check much else. My ideawould be to remove the wings and expose the engine to gain access to clean it then run it.

Hopefully I’ve sorted the oil leak!
This morning I took the inlet manifold off, it was quite messy, The gaskets were well past their best, they were very hard and probably not doing a great job, as was the large round one. Next the rocker cover came off to change the injector seals, Again the rocker gasket had gone hard, and you could clearly see this had been leaking at the rear. The rubber injector seals, again were solid with no give, 3 and 4 were leaking oil. The injector washers were non existent except for one! I’m not sure what had happened? But the previous owner must have had some work done at some point, And had a different copper washer fitted? It was more of a crush washer than a normal injector washer? One had almost vanished! No wonder it had started to sound like a bag of nails in the morning! While I was there, and the manifold was off, I replaced the VCV, and EGR valve (EGR was stuck shut with EML light lit) After a good clean up, and everything back together, I did a pilot learn for VCV, On a test drive the difference was quite clear! I now have a quiet, smooth, and leak free Defender again I’ve been so busy with other projects, that I let this go for too long. It’s nice to have finally spent some time on it, and got it sorted. Wow. Weirdly I've been fixing an oil leak today, passenger side front was showing a leak.
Click image to enlarge I ordered a new brake vacuum pump and gasket. Having taken the tension off the belt with a 3/8 ext bar and removed belt. Click image to enlarge I could pull off the vacuum hose (no tools needed) and then remove pump held on with 3 10mm pins. Click image to enlarge Looked at the gasket and it was fine. (Wasted £100) So I took off the water pump... 4 10mm pins and 4 hose clips, to see the water pump gasket was leaking oil, also the water pump had been bodged by someone previous and filled the 'tell tale' hole up with silicone. I've always been able to smell coolant after a run, but never been able to locate a leak. So 2 birds with one stone, I replaced the pump. You got to love them!!
I just think the more parts you replace, the less will go wrong! Because you know it will fail spectacularly on you one day Any other vehicle and you just wouldn’t put up with it would you? 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

Very many thanks for the pictorials above. I am afraid that "Puma World" has to take a back seat to the events going on in the "Real World" over here at the moment. I did manage to get at the engine with some "Gunk" from Halfords.

You may as well change the block whilst you're at it, it's about the only thing left to change now isn't it
I thought I needed to do my injector seals, but I've removed the top cover and cleaned it all off to find no evidence of seepage around the top of the injectors after a few weeks. Front crank seal next!
Slight misting around the crank pulley, but they are nice and straightforward to do, It’s going to clock up a few miles this year towing, so I want it up together, Most parts are original 2008, so wouldn’t hurt to be replaced. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

Had the manifold off to change the VCV. Seems the oil is being forced out between the manifold and the block. This was evident by the oil on the gasket mating faces and it corresponds with the position of the oil on the block.
Was down at an independent getting this done and assisted so I plainly saw the evidence. New seals on order. Easily sorted once you know how. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |
