the light is triggered by two circuits;
1) Brake fluid low level warning
2) hand brake - this case a wire which can rub on handbrake fulcrum point - it can intermittently contact ground and put the light on.

I've had both situations on mine ! My 90 Project : http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic52774.html

Generally if it is a low brake fluid warning you can make the light come on if you brake whilst going down a hill.

I find that I need to keep the fluid level in the reservoir slightly above the MAX mark: if filled to the MAX I get the flickery light effect.

It might not be the same issue, however my Puma used to have an intermittent hand brake warning lamp.

After checking and confirming the fluid level was fine, I examined the handbrake switch. It's a simple affair exposed by slipping forward the handbrake boot. I think there were one or two plastic fasteners to be removed. Easily done and they can be refitted easily.

On my swtch, the end of the plastic plunger had become damaged/unevenly worn. As a result, when the handbrake was released, the plunger didn't always move forward allowing the lamp circuit to open. After easing and lightly reprofilling the end of the plunger all now works correctly, and has since fixed nearly two years ago.

The switch is really basic in operation and I can't imagine it would be dear to purchase if you wished to replace it. But really its almost to simple to be beyond easy repair

Hope this might help.

Regards and best wishes for the festive season.

I've had the light come on, in cold weather, the rubber gaiter around the handbrake lever itself becomes hard and stiff Shocked and doesn't let the lever fall back to its "stop" position, thus making the light come on.

I had the same trouble a few weeks back, it turned out to be the little float thing in the fluid reservoir had stuck, gave it a few light taps and the problem was solved NO ROAD..........EXCEPT FOR LANDROVER

As mick said, probably needs new brake pads. Mine does it as a handy early warning system if I haven't already caught it. North Cumbria Search and Rescue - Team Leader

I had this trouble last night, Checked the juice in the reservoir and topped it right above the mark as you said. Thumbs Up
So looks like it could be a very early warning system Whistle Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
