Alternator Question
My alternator needs replacing.

It’s a 300 TDI engine with a number of extras fitted (various spotlights, higher powered head unit, amp and additional electrical gauges).

Am I better off putting a higher amp rated alternator on than the one that’s there now? Any advise on which one to go for would be appreciated.

Is your battery in good nick?
I had to buy a new alternator in December and also decided to put in a new battery.
Denso are very good make but mine is td5 so not sure what you would need for a 300tdi.
I would have thought a higher amp may suit you if you have high battery use.

I asked a similar questions recently. The 300tdi alternator is only 65amp as standard. Newer vehicles are 100+. But if your maximum loading is less than 65amps, there's no 'need' to change. If you're going to be changing it anyway, then it would do no harm to have a more powerful unit.

However, if you do that, and then eventually start using more current heavy modifications, I believe you'll also have to upgrade the cable going from the alternator to the battery to handle the bigger current.

So, a 120amp alternator, delivering less than 65amps, then the existing cable will be fine; once you start using more power, you're going to need a bigger cable.

I've been told that even with LED spots, Lightbars, heated seats, heated windscreen, fan running etc etc I'll still be OK with the standard one, but that there wouldn't be much, if any capacity left to charge the battery. I'll probably fit an upgraded one myself at some point, and upgrade the cable to the battery at the same time. Donald

Personally I would buy a 100a one from foundry or similar about £80 and not worry. I have one of these on my Tgv running winches and that copes no problem in std charge cable to keep batts topped up. Cheers

Thanks guys.

The alternator is definitely cooked as it’s giving no charge at all. The battery I think has also gone as I’ve been charging it for 5 hours now and the dash lights are still very dim. Found a battery sticker with an installation date of 2008 to probably worth changing at the same time as the alternator.
