Best Aftermarket Brake Caliper/Disc Make and Supplier
Hi everyone;

I’ve an LS3/6L80 combo in my 2012 110 with every other system updated accordingly.

My brakes are modified with after market discs, braided lines and softer pads etc, but it’s time to look at replacing the callipers with suitably updated system and matching discs.

There are a few suppliers out there such as AP Racing who do the brakes for European marques, and ALCON who supply Twisted, TMD and Bowler etc so are a very highly regarded product specifically re Defenders, but I know I’ve seen some other manufacturers who’s names currently escape me.

Has any one here actually fitted a full replacement system to their Puma Defender and can offer comments re brand, performance etc as against standard or modified factory systems?

I want to keep my 16 inch rims as I am in Australia and use my vehicle in heavy off road conditions. It’s not a show pony.

I’m also asking here as there won’t be many Defenders in Australia with this level of updated brake system vs the UK.

I have a very similar brake setup to you and whilst good it could be better. The only company I can see you have not listed is LOF Thumbs Up

I have no experience of this setup but do use the LOF clutch master cylinder and power spring which I could not be happier with.

Would be worth dropping Luke at LOF a line and having a conversation with him.

I have LOF pads and discs with original callipers front and back, much better than the all original set up they replaced. Couldn’t get the LOF pads past my financial controller, but to be honest I’m happy as they stop Daisy well enough on my rural commute (she’s a mapped 2.4) 👍 2.4TDCI 90 - everyday brilliance

Lovely truck!! And very jealous of the spec.

You’ve pretty much covered the key suppliers. AP, Alcon, and now LOF.

Many (but not all) say to stay away from Tarox.

There’s also some talk of Wilwood offering a nice upgrade that’s more an improvement on what’s already in place, so good solid braking rather than racing spec brakes. It’s certainly where I’d think of heading as I believe the extra ability of the AP/Alcon is somewhat negated by the handling/suspension/tyre combo of a Defender. They will let you down long before you get the max out of the brakes. So Wilwood at half the price offers far improved braking but not OTT.

Worth also noting that Bowler use Alcon, but their set up is a 4-pot front, 4-pot rear set up, where as off-the-shelf Alcon/AP/LOF are a 6-pot front only upgrade. Not sure why they’re different and whether one is better than the other?

Also, you might struggle to get a Alcon or AP BBK for a 16” wheel. I suppose this might be why Bowler have a 4-pot F/R set up as their Defender Challenge 90s run 16” rims and not 18”. So they might suit you well. I think the Wilwoods are also 16”

Anyway, just my two pennies worth…. Monsieur Le Grenadier

I think you will struggle if you keep 16" rims...

I think the bowler kit is the only option, they were originally from the armoured division I believe that needed something uprated due to the weight...

I've ran a big kit now for 6 years + and 30k miles..

I personally would be looking for AP’s or Bowlers, both are available to keep 16” wheels, but unless you have a massively important reason to stay with the 16’s, you’d probably be better to go for the big 6 pots and 18’s especially with the power of the LS

If You want the LOF ones I’d just buy direct from PB brakes in Hong Kong to save some money as they are the manufacturer and LOF just rebrand them

As Jimbo states above PB are the manufacturer that LOF use. I have had a set on my 90 for circa 5 years now and cant fault them at all. As mentioned previously, there is the limitations of the tyres and suspension to consider and imo for the money I can't see that the cost of the big name brands (AP, Bowler) would out perform the PB brakes. 1989 90 4.3 V8

Thank you fellas for the fantastic advice;

So, from this, here are my best options:

Go with 6 Pot PB callipers and discs from the Hong Kong manufacturer if able.
Swap my rims and tyres to 18 inch.
I’ve ARB BP51 Shocks so have very well set up suspension etc dialled in for the vehicle re the LS3 engine as is the rest of the drive train and undercarriage.

I really appreciate the help and advice.

I’ll need to source new rims first as a result, probably Terrafirma Dakar if I can get them in an 18 inch size in Australia.

And fit new Yokohama X-AT tyres. Censored , I’ve just purchased new tyres all round in 16 inch!🥺

I’ll get back in the next two months (Christmas freight issues to Australia) with the purchase solution and install photos and impressions. Again, thank you everyone for the fantastic help, and best wishes to you from Tasmania.
