From my limited knowledge I could be wrong, but I don't think it's rebalancing that you need. I've heard that lowering alters the "angle" of the prop shaft, and so maybe you need a different or an alternative uni joint/propshaft?

Mine does this, but I don't have any lowering or raising of the suspension!!
Would like possible suggestions too! 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html Instagram - @r22oyp Roy |

It could be a UJ. The running angle has changed so it may now show up where it didn't before

I'd be inclined to check your Propshaft UJs and your swivel preloads and suspension bushes.
By lowering the suspension by 2'' you have changed the geometry of the suspension, the load borne by bushes changes slightly, your castor angle will change slightly and the Propshafts run flatter changing the locations of the loads on the UJs. At 11 years old and if it hasn't been done already then you should be considering 4 new UJs, rebushing the suspension and checking and adjusting the preload on the swivels. At standard height your rear propshaft is almost in line now after lowering your U joint have to work more so I think it will be one off the rear U joints. I suspect the one on the diff side.
The front is getting flatter so I don't suspect the front U joints but I don't rule them out either. U joints can have a long life if greased and keep moving. If the grease stops moving they wear out quickly. Thanks for the feedback.
Having read the various comments and driven the Landy a few times, I decided to put the standard springs back on the car paired with the new Bilstein B6s. Yes, it sits a little higher however, the ride is less jiggly than with the lowered suspension and still much tighter than before with the old shocks. More importantly, the vibration from the propshaft/transmission has disappeared. I have therefore concluded that fitting the B6s to the standard spring set up is the best compromise for an improvement in ride/corner wallowing, unless you are prepared to address the vibration issues, which inevitably over time, will create other problems. I have also become adept at changing springs and have the skinned knuckles to show for it! |
