Had a Mega Prop fitted last week as have had a 2" lift.....anyway today whilst doing 70mph the prop suddenly had some sort of failure, and within a fraction of a second had locked itself at the 'knuckle' against the bodywork.
Failure symptoms went like this: a few seconds before failure a twittering/squeeking sound under acceleration - bit like a quiet fan belt squeal, then quickly severe vibration then the prop was starting to bang against the bodywork, then it hit the bodywork hard and froze there - at which point the front wheels locked fast So went from 70mph to 0 whilst trying to fight my way across from lane 2 towards the hard-shoulder in bank holiday traffic on the M5 at Exeter this morning. Evenually stopped across lane 1 and 2, cars skidding all around us including a very lucky caravanner who made emergency use of the hard shoulder. Then we had to drag (literally) the truck onto the hard shoulder. So no real damage, nobody hurt and live to tell the tale - but it was pretty scarey at the time. Apologies if any of you got caught up in the tailback |

Not nice Dude, I had a similar experence whilst driving a fully laden Iveco van doing about 80mph at 3 in the morning in Dijon - my mate was asleep .. but not for long!! scary experience for sure. Luckily for us the motorway was empty but we were in the middle of nowhere in pitch darkness. You were lucky that your UJ failure didnt cause a massive pile up 2005 TD5 90 Hard Top Beer 'n Sex 'n Chips 'n Gravy |

You were lucky! You cuould have rolled over or have the prop inside the cabin. Not to mention the destroy of the gearbox case.

MK: could you please let me know of which Toyota the CV-propshaft is? Part no? That would be grat!
Caution: there are different double knuckle shafts on the market. GKN ones and aftermarket. The aftermarket ones are easy to spot, they have a big hole in the flange. These do not last long..... But: GKN has moved the factory of the double ones to Poland and lost the mould....or so. That means they are not available at the moment. We use the larger HD version to have own props made. Greasable UJs all around. Extra strong sliding piece etc. Plus the benefit of an erased weak point. WANTED: SII or SIII in max 1.5k |

At the moment I do not know the part number. However, it correspnds to any 4x4 Hilux truck with solid front axle. It has a 45º CV (some are 30º) with 80x27mm UJs and about 150 mm sliding joint totally covered. 5 greasing points. I`ll try to find out the P#. Puma 110" SW

Interesting, I had a 2" drop on my 110 and suffered front prop-vibrations, put std springs back on and it was fine. I have a DC prop on my 90 and it's perfect - but I keep it well greased |

yep - new double cardon prop fitted - but not mega-prop one. Only remaining damage are some 'dents' in the gearbox casing which the supplier has offered to replace if I wish. It makes no difference to the gearbox operation and is largely just superficial. The gearbox operation is pretty sweet so I'm reluctant to take a chance in having the gears recased, even if Ashcroft would likely be doing it. Mind you splitting the box down would be an opportunity to fit a new clutch to kill two birds with one stone

It looks like a dead ringa for a Bailey Morris Extreme D/C shaft. I fitted one about 12 months ago, no vibration or any other issues since. |
