The trouble is there seem's to be two scales at each end of motor insurance, the first end is for people who are young and have little driving experience.
But here is the rub at the other end of the scale it is reserved for people of a certain age, insurance companies think that the older we get, especially when reaching sixty, we all have senior moments and as such anybody of that age, are deemed a high risk. Stupid I know but the vagaries of motor insurance defy logic, such as if you have an accident your premium often reduces because the insurance companies think that after an accident you will drive more carefully. I was pleased A-Plan had no increase in premium on the Puma and were very competitive on a new policy for a 200tdi.
As above LV are pretty good or did you try Heritage? Have two defenders both insured with LV and have been very pleased with their annual quotes so much so haven’t bothered to get other quotes, particularly as this years was actually cheaper than last years 2015 HT XS 90

I've just reinsured again this year with A Plan and Aviva. A small reduction in premium although the vehicle is now locked in a garage overnight rather than being on the drive. Very pleased with A Plan. Defender 90XS SW

LV quoted competitively until they realised my front centre seat had been removed. That was an unacceptable modification to them and they would not cover. 1995 Defender 110 CSW

Hi Ramsay, that was the same response that I got from LV! All the other mods were ok but as soon as I said the centre seat had been replaced by a LR cubby box they declined to quote........

Insurance is weird, but some of the things you are listing aren’t modifications.
But saying you have played with seats is going to red flag you Mike |

Maybe we should create a hall of shame on the forum, you can’t beat strength in numbers. If the quotes are bad or if you have had bad service don’t say why, just place them at the bottom of the list.

I’m new to Defenders and amazed how hard it was to insure. I tried the comparison sites and got 3 quotes in excess of £11k per annum. As the car is currently standard I managed to switch over from my 2015 Lotus Exige which I’ve just sold with a slight premium reduction with Direct Line, but they won’t touch any modifications.
A-Plan came back with a very reasonable £396 including all of the mods that will be carried out next week so my new policy starts with them on Tuesday. I’m 36 with limited no claims as I have a company car and I tend to only keep my toys for less than 12 months |

I may be totally wrong here so feel free to shoot me down in flames !
I’m sure I read somewhere that an insurance company cannot wheedle out of a claim by saying that because you had a non contributory mod you weren’t covered, in the OPs case, an idiot running into the back of him at a red light has absolutely nothing to do with his cubby box! Whereas if he had his 3 year old grand child sitting on it at the time well......! 2010 Defender 110 Station Wagon, Santorini Black. |
