Thanks everyone for your thoughts.
Progress. Close inspection shows that it tis impossible for the dust cover to be blown off onto the highway. It is possible that that dust cover was knocked off when the wheel was being attached. So I've put a new dust cover on and degreased the wheel and will see if oil flows during the next week or so.

United Kingdom 2015 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Santorini Black
I got my car back today after it was fitted with a new stub axle seal, gaskets and wheel bearings. Under warranty.
Not sure if they thought to check the breather though! Will wait and see what happens! Thumbs Up 2015 90 XS Santorini Black

Thanks for all your suggestions.

The problem was finally diagnosed as a bent axle shaft and possibly stub axle. The bend in the axle was dislodging and damaging the outer hub/axle shaft seal.
