Why didn't Land Rover develop the Defender in the same way that MB continually developed the G wagon? Big Cry Defender 90XS SW

I suspect, even with the mega price, Merc don’t make much, if any, money on the G Class. It’s more of a halo model to them. Land Rover were too small to accept a business model like that. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

They stopped making RHD for the UK for over a decade but you could still special order them; they started bringing them back in, as a standard model, c2011. LHD have been in constant production since the beginning and the German military still use them too.

As for the article, it did make me laugh when they said they were going to make them 30% more rigid - one thing G-wagons aren’t is lacking in rigidity Laughing

Don't forget the that G Wagon production is also bolstered by the Peugeot P4, the Algerian Tiaret version, the Austrian Puch G, the Egyptian Kader, the Greek ELBO and the Malaysian DEFTEC. So they're being made by many companies and the licensing fees from that will help keep the Mercedes coffers flush.

Mercedes G-Wagon production is not carried out by Mercedes but rather by Magna Steyr, formly Puch. Although Daimler have had an ownership percentage when the G-Wagaon was being built by Steyr-Daimler-Puch, they do not under MS (afaik).

My understanding is that the G-Wagon has always been built by Puch for Mercedes and Merc provide them with engines, drivetrain and interior components (technology and equipment - generally the tech from the outgoing S-Class).

So Mercedes don’t benefit from the other G-wagon spin off products afaik.

Could someone please explain the second part of this description for me?

Safety tech includes Active Lane Keeping Assist, and the Pre-Safe system, which activates precautionary occupant protection measures if the car senses a collision is imminent.

Thanks Bluest Thumbs Up

Basically Pre-safe tensions up seat belts, closes electric windows etc if automatic sensors pick up on certain signals.

I had a sort of 'nightmare' visions of airbags etc being deployed automatically prior to a collision.

Just how fast can yo close a window or sunroof? Do you remember the flip up roll bar on 90s Merc SLs? Always looked like it would decapitate any passengers in those tiny rear seats! 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I lived in in the middle east for 5 years, they used to be more popular but they're certainly not common. You see allot of high end Patrol/Land-cruiser though and range rovers 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW

Strange. Given I'm a massive fan of my boxy, over-sized period 4x4, I've never taken to the look of the G. An AMG variant passed me yesterday, piano black with gold trim and wheels Whistle . Obviously I'd love to be able to hammer down the autoroute at the same speed he was, but otherwise it holds no appeal. And aside from the tech benefits of this new 2018 model it looks no different (not sure why they've plastered it in the disrupting patterns, you can spot the G a mile away), but the dash looks awful. Don't mind the LCD screen, but steering wheel with all the metal, and the vents in particular, look awful. Good though it may purport to be, I'm not sure I'd ever buy one. Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

I knew you had to be slightly mad to pay that sort of money for a G Wagen but didn't realise you had to be a complete idiot to drive one . Laughing Defender 90XS SW
