I had white misty smoke coming from mine at start up, more noticeable on a cold morning. wasn't really using water, turned out to be a hairline crack in head it must have been letting water into hot exhaust port and producing lots of steam!
as the head warmed the crack must have closed enough not to notice. bungud a new shiny head from turners on and cured it! My 109 thread my youtube channel |

Hold your hand over the exhaust for a few seconds, you'll soon be able to tell if it smells overwhelmingly of diesel or if it's a sweeter smell - ie anti freeze so leaking coolant.
Hopefully it's not a cracked head Matt. '89 90 CSW with a 3.5 V8 conversion (WIP) - http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic46809.html |

I recon its the glow plugs, kit. Sometimes if you use cheep ones, they don't last all that long. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Bad glow plugs might make it smoke more at first startup but I don't
think wouldn't make a difference after that. I start my 300tdi without giving it heat anyway, glowplugs aren't really necessary on these engines. Matt. '89 90 CSW with a 3.5 V8 conversion (WIP) - http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic46809.html |

you will be surprised, what bad glow plugs can do. I had a very similar problem with my Dturbo 306. With the glow plugs not heating the diesel properly. With the temperatures been as low as they have been is going to throw up weak parts.
I had to change my 306 HDI battery, as it wouldn't start when the temperature dropped right off. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back Success is 90% Inspiration and 4 minutes Preparation # you can make it! |

if the timing was out you could have excess fuel in the cylinder prior to combustion stroke, more apparent when cold. Cheers
