Main stealer has quoted £683.33 in VAT and said he can do something on this price. Seems steep to me - what does anyone else think?

Thanks Martin - makes me wish I'd paid more attention to practical things!
Got him down to £550 vs the independent at £470.00 and given the timing and the fact I'm going to be doing a lot of driving between Christmas and New Year I think I'm left with little choice. Be interested what others have paid at main dealer / indie. 110 UW - '15 2.2 90 - '85 V8 soft-top RRC - '84 5 door, Option Pack C, 33k miles from new --- Elise S1 - '00 Millennium SE Elan +2 - '68 kit built by my dad Panda 4x4 - '87 in Italy |

Well, maybe £300-£350 is good.
£100 for parts, £140 for labour, plus VAT etc... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

I need to change jobs... £140/hour would suit me fine
Seriously - I would expect a good indie to be around £350 for the job. Don't forget they get the parts at "trade" price as well... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

OK - for comparison - just checked the last invoice for the Volvo XC70... At a really good local Indie (for Volvo). Family business, and great service
Full Service (incl Pollen Filter etc) PLUS rear disks and pads.... £460 + VAT Here http://www.huttonbros.co.uk/ Volvo disks (huge vented thingies) and pads and more expensive than Landy parts... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

My main dealer locally couldn't even align my LED headlights properly, yet Halfords come MOT time did.
And when they don't my clutch, not only was it reidiculous expensive, but never even tightened up and cleaned the main Earth strap on the transfer box so within no time I had lighting issues as well, which could be dangerous if that started say on the motor way. An dyou have brake lights and indicators and all sorts flashing. All due to highly resistive earth. KEEP CALM AND Drill ON 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

Yip, DIY..
I know, I know, it's your brakes - but they are a very simple mechanical system. Lots of threads and info on the forum here as to the process, gaskets required and the little gotchas (spacing the pistons to get the new rotors in being the only one I can think of at the moment). Assuming you've got sockets, invest in a torque wrench, threadlock, gasket scraper and breaker bar maybe, that's about it? You'll be surprised how many other £-saving jobs you'll realise you can do also. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants... |

Thanks all - will definitely need to start looking at DIY. On this occasion timing - Christmas - was against me.

They probably don't have headlamp beam setter, i expect they just farm it out to the local garage who does their MOT's. Not many main dealers do their own MOT's these days, as they'd have to accept bookings from anyone and only charge the £54 fee. |
