the 306 Hdi lads had this debate too, about adding 2 stroke using the common rail injection system. One lad did put a bottle of 2 stroke to a full tank, and all it did was make the injectors quieter. No other problems at all, ![]() I do agree with you I wouldn't bother at all, in fact I wouldn't bother with additives either. I added redx stuff to my Dturbo 306 ( mechanical pump) and it did the square root of ![]() ![]() Success is 90% Inspiration and 4 minutes Preparation # you can make it! |

you are both wrong! The TDI trumps the TD5 and puma any day, and you can bank that at Lloyds ![]() Success is 90% Inspiration and 4 minutes Preparation # you can make it! |

It's not really the filling station that's the issue. It's the additive package which gets added to the base fuel when it's loaded into the tanker which makes the difference. The branded fuels tend to have better additive packages than the supermarkets. The aftermarket additives do the same to an extent, but they're not scientifically blended and matched like the oil companies do themselves. |

Not all fuel stations, premium or otherwise have super diesel.
Constantly switching brands is not going to make a difference if anything worse because your mixing all sorts of additives and mixtures all be it tiny difference between them all. For these reasons, I stick to Esso standard. (Or occasionally Shell standard but very rarely) and Millers addictive. Premium brand fuel of the same brand all the time, with the same additive. Then there, will be very little motor re-calibration having to be done and you can keep running at good performance. It's not always practical to stick to the same brand, but this is what I tend to do. TheThunder Rolls🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

I wasn’t really looking to restart the debate about 2 stroke, just reporting that my use of 2 stroke seemed to be the cause of a starting problem, or a major coincidence if not. I guess I could start putting 2 stroke back in and see if this then sees the return of the starting problem. There can only be so much coincidence before it becomes test results that are fact and point to the cause.

You don't mentione the model you are driving but slow starting on my td5 was the grease in the startermotor gearbox. After 14 years it was some starnge sticky
![]() Now with new multi purpose grease it start better then ever. Roel 1984 90 2.5 na Diesel - RR V8 (1994-2001) 1997 Camel Trophy Discovery 300TDI (2001-2009) 2005 G4 Discovery III 4.4 V8 (2008-2018) It's gone but it still hurts. 2003 90 Td5 (2009-now) |

Not challenging you Steve, I just wonder how much of a difference it really makes, and how much is folk actually expecting a difference - a placebo effect if you like? Maybe that's a difference between a Tdi and TD5? My brother invested in the kit to make 'diesel' from used vegetable oil, filtering, additives etc. I don't know all the details. Every now and again I've stuck some into my old wagon. I can't say I've ever noticed any difference to performance, or smokiness or whatever. So, if my car runs happily on that stuff, made up in the back of his garage, does this or that additive pack in the fuel really make any difference? THe comment above about saving money using supermarket vs Oil Co. branded fuel was interesting - and something that could be loosely monitored by anyone keeping receipts, recording mileage and then doing the average MPG calculation. That could be something interesting to play with. Not so easy where I live - real 'Tesco Town'. Of the 8 petrol stations, only three are oil companies, then it's Asda x 1, Morrisons x1 and Tesco x 3 Donald 1994 Defender 300Tdi 110 SW - owned since 2002 - 230k miles and going strong (The 'rolling restoration' or tinkering thread: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic58538.html ) 2000 Range Rover P38 4.0L V8 in the past.. I can't see its linked to poor starting in this case. Coincidence. See how she starts when it gets colder again. Cheers

I am going through about a tank a week so it should be winter fuel. The odd thing is that the starting has been poor since the warm weather back in summer and the cold weather made no difference better or worse.
The only change was when I stopped using 2 stroke and filled three tanks of V Power, ironically as we were getting the we were getting into the very cold weather, and this is when magically the starting really improved - not instantly but over the last couple of weeks. Yes it could just be a coincidence but the symptoms point to the 2 Stroke so far. If I put 2 stroke back in and the problem starts again then that is more than a coincidence for me. I don't want to restart using 2 stroke at the moment as I need to know it will start with no drama. By the way - I am not anti 2 stroke - I have really liked using it as I think the engine does run smoother but I can't use it at the cost of having poor starting. I am using V Power as I feel that has a similar effect to smoothness of the 2 stroke. |
