I assume you have the dates the wrong way round, not sure if a 90 axle has a lower load rateing than the 110. Also I think the 110 has a larger rear springs so you would need to change the spring seat. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

There's no such thing as a factory 1985 300tdi, so if that's what you've got then the engine is a retrofit. Regardless though, 90 axles of any vintage are not suitable for a 110 as the latter have bigger springs and heavier duty diffs. Darren

I'm going to fit a Discovery rear axle to my early military 110.
- It gets rid of the clunky Salisbury ground anchor
- Its an instant upgrade to disc brakes (but Ill be changing the master cylinder and bias valve)
- Its cheaper and easier to fit a locking / atb diff.

I don't buy into all the 'its not rated' BS, I've had discoveries before, given them some serious punishment and loads and never had any problems with the axle, neither for that fact did the Camel Trophy ones and they're a lot heavier than my 110 will ever be.

I think its more important to sort out the braking differences between Drums and Discs so you don't end up with overly powerful rear brakes!

Might be BS to you... but, if you have an accident/cause on, and the authorities start poking at your truck and realise you've got the "wrong" axle on it, don't come crying here...

There was a fella not too long ago that had "wrong axles" on a 110 (cant quite remember but I think they where Disco axles), something gave way on the rear and sent the 110 to the bottom of a lake with him in it.

Afaik 110s have short nose or salisbury diffs fitted, not long nose diffs which 90s have. So the props probably wouldnt fit.

Why not just get the correct axle for your car?

That said it is common to fit D2 front axles to challange trucks and the like

Also, Land Rover didn't develop a stronger axle just for the fun of it Rolling Eyes Darren

Is the D2 front axle an upgrade over the normal 110 front axle?...and are they a strait swap?

I'm aware of that case but the issue wasn't the 'axle' it was the brakes. AFAIK it was a RRC disc brake rear axle but the master cylinder and valves etc had been left original which basically biased the brakes to the rear rather than the front causing a loss of control under heavy braking.

Any change from drum brakes to disc on the rear axle (Salisbury / wolf / disco etc) should include the relevant master cylinder.

Patrick,
No the D2 axle is not a straight swap into a 110.
The D2 used different radius arms, so it would need some specialist fabrication to modify the axle, or make new radius arms to connect it to the chassis.
Also the panhard rod position is different, again needing specialist modification.
D2 axles use a different pattern for the hub bolts, that will mean different wheels, front and rear.

As some wise people have said above, using the correct type axles for the vehicle is the safest and easiest option for a road vehicle.
