I have a detachable 48 spline boss from FCX but they no longer sell it. The boss is from Snap-On but don't know where you can get it now? I also don't think it is any slimmer than the standard boss?
Click image to enlarge I thought Optimill were producing a boss for the Startech/Raid, but have subsequently heard it was stopped, not sure why. So sorry no help at all James MY2012 110 2.2TDCi XS SW Orkney Grey - http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic43410.html MY1990 110 200TDi SW beautifully faded Portofino Red - https://www.defender2.net/forum/post743641.html#743641 MY1984 90 V8 Slate Grey - https://www.defender2.net/forum/post744557.html#744557 Instagram @suffolk_rovers |

What do you mean by too large? Too far from the stalks? Doesnt fit the wheel or generally too big?

Couldn't find exactly what I wanted so in the end I bought the Optimill one then drilled and tapped new holes to fit Startech.
Shame to have to attack a very nicely machined bit of Kit, and i cant really see how its a big deal for them to add holes in the correct pattern for the defender at manufacture. Some of the bosses out there while they may FIT a defender certainly aren't 'For' a defender. 3 Landrovers |

Still not really explained what you mean. It seems like you've bought a boss that fits the Defender that doesnt fit your steering wheel and are annoyed at the fact.

When I say too large I mean that the boss supplied by Startech is quite far away from the stalks. It’s okay but I would much prefer something closer. I really don’t want to have to butcher the Optimil boss. It’s a great steering wheel though.

Ok i've got you. The majority of the bosses available are, in my opinion far too long (far from the stalks) for no reason what so ever...
Exmoor Trim do a very slim boss though which I will eventually change mine for. |

bankz5152 is this the Exmoor one
https://www.exmoortrim.co.uk/slimline-boss-2821.html Please correct me if I’m wrong but the pcd needed for the Startech is 74mm and this boss is 70mmm which is the same as the Optimill one. |

I contacted them last week, they said their slimline one did not fit. There is a thread on here that hints they made a small batch to fit Raids and when they were sold that was it.

I also read they had discontinued the Startech/Raid detachable boss, I assumed they had found a problem with it? It was on my shopping list as it looked slimmer than the one I have. James

The Startech steering wheel is made by Raid. The Raid steering wheel boss is TUV approved. The Raid boss is a cage like structure now this is where I start guessing as it is out of my knowledge zone. I am guessing the cage like structure is to form a collapseable cage in the event of a collision. The slim line bosses I have read about do not appear to have a TUV or other approval mark.
Some quick release bosses are advertised as off road use only whereas some are advertised as road legal. If going for a quick release boss I personally would go for one advertised as road legal. Now this is where I am guessing so I could be wrong. The Defender is an old design and No collapsible cage is built into the steering wheel or boss. I am guessing that the Raid steering wheel and bosses are designed for more modern vehicles which do have collapsible steering wheels hence the cage design of the boss and TUV approval. Brendan |
