Cheers, the starter engaged and spun the engine, no clicking or slow cranking. But engine wouldn’t start. Bought a new one and on the button. Not up on electronics but if i overhaul the solenoid will this resolve the magnetic field problem?

I've just had a few days of chasing a starter problem, after replacing the solonoid I was still getting problems and after taking the motor out for the second time I decided to look into the motor itself. It was full of 15 years of dust, diesel residue(leaky fuel pressure valve at various times over the years), oil leaks(leaks over the years from the half moon part of the cam cover at the back of the engine) and all the crud that builds up over the years.
Yes a fiddly job, easily sorted with a few splahes of panel wipe and a blast from the air gun from the compressor. Works like a new one now. |

I had a local place recondition mine last week for 50 quid. It was only 2years old but went through a river at speed and killed it. This was it after it was done, top job.

If you have half an hour you can read my trials and tribulations with a starting problem here...
http://www.defender2.net/forum/post642309.html#642309 As always got it sorted and looked to enjoy on the button motoring. However i now have a sticky solenoid issue which requires a light tap with a hammer. I am going to monitor but as starter under warranty will probably drop off and change as i have a 10 months left.
