They reduce the amount of general road dirt etc. that gets to the discs. They also keep water off them which helps on very wet roads, mine is missing the front shields and after a run in the wet the first brake application can be weak momentarily until the pads clear the water off the discs. It’ll still happen with them but at a much lower level.

I’ve also found that when doing a lot of miles in the wet on unsealed forest roads the lack of rear shields means the rear pads were lasting about 3,000 miles as the spray kicked up was full of abrasives. Not so much of a problem for the front. As such I refitted rear ones a while back which restored good pad life, still not got round to doing the front guards yet.

What they are not good for is more serious off-road scenarios such as pay-and-play where deep mud is encountered. For this kind of use they are better off removed as above.

Are they easy enough to remove?
I had a feeling the front shields were bolted through the kingpin bolts... Or is that just a bracket

Yeah pretty easy. 1x small 10 or 13mm bolt/nut and then the nut of the steering lock.

Its the only bit Ive had trouble with on my 2015MY..
Came loose a couple of times and rattled.
Lost a fastening bolt and rattled.
Currently broken and requiring replacement.
Steel should have been half a millimetre thicker.
